Mrs. VDV's Philosophy of Missing and Late Work
Assignments in Mrs. VonDerVellen's class are given in order to
prepare sutdents for upcoming lessons or to practice, review and
reinforce things that are taught in class.
It is very important that students finish and submit assignments
on time. Often classwork builds upon the assignment given
previously, and if a student has not done his/her homework,
learning does not progress.
However, since all assignments given have educational value, it
is beneficial for the student to do them, no matter how late. For
this reason, I will accept late work for all assignments EXCEPT
for those that require in-class participation.
Grading of late work not due to excused absence
Assignments that are one day late will receive 10% off the
student's score.
Assignments more than one day late may receive up to 50% off the
student's score.
But I was absent ! !
OK! Don't freak out. Refer to the page "Absence?" on this
website. It tells all about how you get extra time with an
excused absence.
However--and this is important--don't forget to write "absent"
with the date on the top of your paper when you hand it in if
your absence was excused.
Zeros, letters or weird comments on my grade report
"M" (missing) These assignments are missing and should be
submitted immediately (unless the excused absence thing applies
to you)
"ab" (absent) means an absence either on the day it was assigned
or due.
Things marked "r" (redo) may have points given, but the
assignment needs to be made up.
"nc" assignment is marked as no count. Don't be fooled by this!
In most cases, you still need to get this in. Unless it also
says "ex" (for excused) next to the assignment, the "nc" will
turn to a zero within a week if the assignment is not turned in.
(checkmark) These assignments may or may not be late, but have
been turned in and not graded yet.
"0" (zero) OK, it's not a letter, but it is something that in
most cases can still be made up. See your teacher if you're
interested.
Help! I need extra credit!
If you need to pull your grade up, here's the first thing to do.
Make sure you have any missing or late work turned in. Then, take
advantage of any makeup opportunities: spelling tests, redo
packets, sometimes rework on projects, papers or quizzes. Grade
still too low? See me for suggestions.
