Introduction

In Fourteen Hundred and Ninety-Two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue…

So goes a very old poem.  Did you know that Columbus is not the only important explorer?  Many others explored just as he did for some of the same, and for some different reasons.  With limited resources and very limited knowledge of what lay beyond the land (or water) that could be seen, these explorers showed great courage and entrepreneurial spirit to go beyond the “comfort zone” of the day.  Why?  What drove these explorers to endure hardship and overcome fears?  What did they hope to find?  Did their hopes turn into reality?  Did they find more than they were looking for…or less?

This WebQuest will help you find the answers to these and other questions about explorers of long ago as they left their homes and encountered the land we know today as the Americas.
