4th Grade Handbook

4th GRADE HANDBOOK

4th Grade Information

Dear Parents,

I am very excited about this school year.  I thank God for the opportunity to teach your child academically and spiritually at Trinity Christian School!  I pray that my classroom will be an environment that radiates Christ’s love and that your child’s memory of fourth grade will be full of love, laughter, and learning.   Fourth grade is a big step for your child.  They will begin to truly apply all the skills they have learned in the past years.  There is a lot to cover this school year.  I have tried to include information you will need and explanations of classroom procedures that I use.  I am looking forward to a great school year with your child!!

COMMUNICATION:
It is important for us to maintain good communication in order to best meet the needs of your child.  I set up a routine that I hope will work well for you, your child, and me.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER:

I will send home a weekly newsletter on Mondays. Also on Mondays, you will find your child's tests and quizzes from the previous week. Please sign the attached signature sheet and return the signature sheet and tests on Tuesday. Some of the tests will be given back to you after each nine weeks. You should still check the Daily Folder each day for notes, assignments and other completed schoolwork. I plan to use the Assignment notebook that your child will be given at the beginning of school. Students will keep assignments in that book.

If you would like to get in touch with me, you may call the school or my home phone number is 864-3690.

I would also like to use e-mails to contact parents.  This is an easy way to send individual notes quickly.     If this is o.k. with you, please send me your e-mail address.  My email address is: lstreettcs@msn.com

WEBSITE:

I have a teacherweb site that has the weekly newsletter, study guides for tests and quizzes, directions for projects etc.  PLEASE USE THIS FOR INFORMATION.  (It took DAYS to make and much time to keep it up-to-date)

I hope you find this page helpful!!!!!!!!!!

FIELD TRIPS

Our field trips correlate with various subjects we study this year.

FORT NECESSITY: We study the French and Indian War in History and also study and read a biography of George Washington.

DOMINION POST: In March we will participate in Newspaper in Education Week. During this week, we will be doing many activities that involve reading the Newspaper. We follow up the unit by visiting the Dominion Post.

WVU ENTOMOLOGY DEPT. and WVU ARBORETUM This is a follow up to our insect and plant unit.

PROJECTS

There are many projects in 4th grade. I feel this is a great way for students to apply and reinforce what they are learning in class. I always give written instructions, oral instructions and grading procedure about each project. Parents job is to OVERSEE and GUIDE students with the projects. You may help to make sure they understand the instructions and are following them correctly. Remember this is the STUDENT'S work.

MONTHLY BOOK  PROJECTS

It is very important for students to get in the habit of reading, reading and reading.  They will have monthly reading assignments and will be doing a monthly book report or project.  Different genres and projects will be used each month.  Each month students will receive detailed instructions for their report. We will also participate in the Book-it program. Your child will have a calendar that must be filled in daily with the amount of TIME spent reading. Each month will have a TIME goal that must be met to receive the Book-it pizza slip.

100% HOMEWORK CLUB

Students should only have 30-40 min. of homework a night.  (This does not include Library Book Reading and various projects we will be doing throughout the year.)  We will try to get most of the schoolwork finished in class. Each quarter, students have the opportunity to join the 100% HOMEWORK CLUB.    I will post student’s first names, for each quarter, that have turned in all their homework ON TIME. (TEACHERWEB) They will become members of the 100% HOMEWORK CLUB !!!  Special recognition will be made for those students who turn in all homework on time for the entire school year.

DISCIPLINE  AND RULES

The purpose of discipline is to disciple students in the Lord’s way. While punishment looks back, discipline addresses the future. "Discipline" is instruction that molds, shapes, corrects, and inspires appropriate behavior.   Discipline provides the opportunity to redirect students.

I have 3 simple rules for my classroom:

  1. Be safe   (no fighting, rules for playground, hallway etc.)
  2. Be respectful (to each other and teacher, includes raising hands, keeping hands, feet, and objects to yourself, etc)
  3. Be responsible (turning in work, staying in your seat, following direction the first time, etc)

These rules will be discussed extensively the first weeks of school.

My goal is to teach self-discipline.  I have established positive and negative consequences.

Negative consequences   (or, if you choice to break a rule)

I feel the best consequences are reasonable and logical.  If there is a consequence that fits the “crime”, I will use that.  (Example:  cleaning up a mess, redoing a sloppy paper)

Other penalties:

Name on board:  (a chance to get self-control)

Check by name:  loose 5 or more minutes of recess.  Students fill out behavior form (this is a form where the student explains why he/she is being disciplined) It needs to be signed by a parent.

2 checks by name: Loose all recess.  Students fill out behavior form.

Name on board 3 or more times in a week, or other serious infraction:  note sent home to parents in Friday Folder

See Trinity’s  Parent Handbook for other school rules and consequences.

Positive consequences

Praise (daily)

Positive notes home

Class rewards: throughout the year
