Your child should not have much homework. If they do, it is work not completed in class and the study time for tests and quizzes. Be sure your child is not "putting off" working on the projects for this month. This is their homework.
If they seem to be bringing a lot of work home, please let me know. I try to watch this when I check the planner, but remember there are 18 students. I appreciate your help.

MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH.
INSECT PROJECT: DUE SEPTEMBER 15 (students may bring to school anytime)
I sent home the instruction page last week. Students should have most of their insects collected and put in the freezer or jars. I have decided to change the written report for the project. Students are only required to write 5 paragraphs about 5 of their insects. The paragraphs only have to to 5-6 sentences. They still have to collect and pin 10. Also, label ALL 10. The directions stated that the written report needed to be typed. If it is impossible for your child to do this, that is ok. I stressed that a hand-written report needs to be neat and readable.
I thought we would get to be in the computer lab, and could work on the paragraphs there, but it may be hard to do during the first weeks of class.
You may decide that you want your child to write a paragraph for each insect. That is fine. The more writing and reading that children do, the better!!
Parents, please help your child learn basic computer skills. They only have computer lab once every 2 weeks. It is really impossible for me to teach 18 students basic skills.
This is an example of a paragraph for a ladybug.
example:
LADYBUG The ladybug's scientific name is Coccinellidae. I found my ladybug in my mother's flower garden. It was on a Cone flower. There are more than 5000 different species of ladybugs. Ladybugs are useful, because they are a natural means of pest control. The wings on the ladybug that I collected, reminded me of a turtle's shell.

MORE INFO FOR INSECTS:
Your child has learned a lot of information about God's wonderful design of insects. About half of all the animals in the world are insects. Scientist have identified 800,000 different kinds of insects, but they think there are many others that have not been found yet. Every year, from 7,000-10,000 new kinds of insects are discovered and named. This leads Entomologist to think that there may be more than 10 million kinds of insects, each with its own unique features and purposes. So I asked the students if they could think of 10 million different designs for insects. (well, of course not, BUT God did!!) I do believe that each students can apply the information that they have been learning about insects, and they can design ONE. Last week, they were to be thinking about an insect that they could design. --- Must have 3 body parts and 6 legs.
As we are learning each section about insects (example, eyes, mouth, habitat, etc) they are to design theses areas of their insect.
The direction sheet for the INSECT MODEL PROJECT is in today's folder.
Students will do this project instead of a chapter test. It is due Sept. 19. Use items around the house. Be creative!!!
