--------------------------------------

Am I required to participate in the after school concerts?

Yes!! All choir members are required to participate in all concerts (unless
they have been forbidden due to disciplinary actions). Choir is
a "performing art" and concerts are the "performances!" Also, students'
grades are partially determined by participating in concerts (see handbook
page 2).

Do I have to try out for All-Region?

It depends.... If you are a member of the Middle School Select Choir or the
High School Honors Choir you are required to audition as a requirement of
membership in those groups. All other choir members in grades 7 through 12
are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to audition for the All-Region Choirs but it is not
required. It's a GREAT experience!

Can I drive myself to an out-of-town choir event?

Choir members are not allowed to drive themselves to an out-of-town choral
event unless extenuating circumstances make it necessary. However, approval
must be gained PRIOR TO THE EVENT from both the principal and choral
director by the student's parents.

Can I leave from an out-of-town choir event with someone other than my parent?

Students are not allowed to leave an out-of-town choir event with anyone
other than their parents--and then only if they are "checked out" through a
director or designated chaperone. Again, if extenuating circumstances make
it necessary, PRIOR APPROVAL must be gained from director by student's
parents via phone call or face-to-face meeting. Notes will not be accepted
in such circumstances.

What if I don't have black shoes or my shoes are black tennis shoes/boots?

You will NOT be allowed to participate in the concert. What we look like on
stage is just as important as how we sound (first impressions are LASTING
impressions)!! Everyone on stage must have the proper footwear to go with
the tuxedos and formal dresses. You don't have to spend a fortune on these
shoes, just make sure they are dress shoes and they are solid black.

Do I have to buy a tuxedo/formal gown to be in choir?

No. The Alma School District purchases all choir uniforms for choir
students in grades 7 through 12. All you have to purchase is the correct
footwear (black socks and shoes for the men and black closed-toe dress shoes
for the girls).

--------------------------------------

Do 6th grader choir students wear the tuxedos/formal gowns?

No. 6th Grade choir students are asked to wear a "Sunday Best" outfit of
their choice. Remember, no jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, flip-flops, or
hiking boots are allowed on stage. Guys, shirt with tie looks AWESOME!
Girls, please plan on wearing a dress for 6th grade concerts!

--------------------------------------

Do I have to be able to read music to be in choir?

Absolutely not!! If everyone knew how to read music naturally, would there
be any music teachers in the world? One of our goals as music educators is
to help all choir students gain the ability to read music. By the end of
your 6th grade year you'll know quite a lot!!
