I know this was one of your favorite writing lessons!

JUST THE TWO OF US opens with Will Smith reminiscing
    about his growing-up...

I told my parents I wanted to build a castle in the sky.
“Here’s a pencil and paper, let’s draw the plans,” they replied.

I told my parents that one day a queen would wear my ring.
They said, “The only way to marry a queen is to be a king.”

I told my parents I wanted to kick lil’ Reggie’s butt.
They replied, “lets say that you do…then what?”

I told my parents I’m 17; I’m getting married ‘cause I love her.
They replied, “We won’t fight you if you can tell us her favorite color.”

I told my parents I’m not going to college; I wanna rap.
They said, “Wherever you go, remember one day you’ll go back.”

I told my parents I was going to be the next Bill Cosby, funny and rich.
They replied, “Why not just work hard and be the first Will Smith?”

I told my parents I’m about to be a father and I’m scared.
They replied, “Sometimes all you need to do is simply be there.”

My son told me he wanted to build a castle in the sky.
“Here’s a pencil and paper, let’s draw the plans!” I replied.

He then pledges loving devotion to his son as he
    gently shares a father's found wisdom…

What are your thoughts on Will Smith's dedication to his parents, and the song to his son?

So yesterday, at the Reading Conference, I think  Mrs. Hicks must have thought I was crazy. I was on pins and needles all day, just hoping for that extra ticket to the luncheon with Mr. Peck. The day began as we attended the second general session , where we listened to another wonderful author, Jack Gantos. He was really funny, and I learned a lot about writing and the power and joy it held for him. After listening and laughing, we decided to wait in line to have our books signed my him. Now keep in mind that as much as I enjoyed listening to Mr. Gantos, and even as much as I cannot wait to read many of his books to my class, I was truly there to see Mr. Peck.

There we stood, crammed tightly between the book lovers in front of and the book lovers behind us. Just ahead we noticed a growing excitement, and peering around a group of teachers who should I see but the one and only Mr. Peck. Mrs. Hicks giggled as I breathed in deeply and became the kid in a candy store, overwhelmed by all the possibilities. It didn't take long for me to jump ship and abandon the long line I had been waiting in forever. I moved right on over behind the two or three people that jumped ship just a little faster than I, and there waited smiling happily to meet Mr. Peck.

What do you say to someone as talented as Mr. Peck? Simply, I love your books? Like he hasn't heard that a million times. How about, my class LOVES Grandma Dowdel? No, he's probably heard that a zillion times. In the end it didn't matter because the teacher in front of me, who I am sure is a sweet person haha, stole all my thunder! Ugghhhh! "Mr. Peck, I truly love your books," she says. "Grandma Dowdel is so wonderful," she says. "My class just loves you," she says. Well now, I couldn't go right behind her and say the exact same could I? I guess I could have gone up and pointed at her, like my kids do sometimes, and said, "Yeah...what she said!"

Anyone that knows me, knows that I just beamed and asked him if he would autograph a book for my class ,which he so graciously did. He was just as nice as I imagined him to be. Anyone that has a character as deep hearted as Grandma Dowdel inside them just has to be a good person. In the end, not only did I get his autograph, Mrs. Hicks and I were both able to attend his luncheon. I cannot wait to share it with my class!

Well guys, I did not get to meet Mr. Peck today, and I cannot even tell you how sad that mad me. But I was very glad to pick up two new books by Mr. Peck! Did you know that the book A Long Way from Chicago started out as a short story? I can't wait to tell you all about it! Even better, did you know that there are more stories with Grandma Dowdel? Bet you can't wait to find out more!!

Well, I am going to miss you guys tomorrow, but at the same time I am so excited about going to the Arkansas Reading Association Conference!! I know I already mentioned to you that Richard Peck will be there, and yes, although I say it often, he is truly one of my favorite authors!!

We have read his story A Long Way From Chicago, and I know that you all loved it! Can Richard Peck create a strong and detailed character or what?

I think I might know, but I want you to share anyway...what was your favorite Grandma Dowdel moment?

Like I said, I am so excited to see Mr. Peck tomorrow! Can't wait to let you know how it goes!

So...what do you guys think of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing?? Do you have any connections with Peter? And what do you think about Fudgie - crazy kid right??

I really like the conclusion, how Judy Blume ends the story by giving Peter a new understanding of growing up and what that means. What do you think?
