My period 1 class was able to watch President Obama's speech in class.  Also, many students watched the speech in their social studies classes.  I'm interested in hearing your ideas about the speech.  Please use your "Cognitive Strategies" from class to write a comment (or comments).  You may also comment on what another student wrote.

The White House website has a copy of the speech or you can stream it Online.  If you'd like to reread the speech, click the following link:

Here are some cognitive strategies that may work for your response.  You may use these sentence beginnings or your own ideas:
Evaluate:
What I like/dislike about the text is ______________ because…
My opinion is ______ because…
The most important message is…

Ask Questions:
I wonder why…
Does this mean…
What about…

Analyze the Author's Craft:
A golden line for me is…
This word/phrase _______ stands out for me because…
I like how the speaker uses ______ to show…

Example:
One golden line for me is when President Obama says, "I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself."  I liked that part because I agree with him. We have to meet the goals we set for ourselves in order to be successful.  We can't depend on other people to do our work for us.

A golden line to me was "you cant drop out of school and drop into a good job." I thought this was a golden line because it show you need to go to school to get any good job in the US.

I like how you put the web address to watch the speech on your blog because i think it's important for us to watch the speech when he is telling kids that we need to stay in school and do good in school for us to get a good job when we are older.

One Golden line for me is "Everyone has something to give to the country."
IT tells tells us that no matter how different we are and how differnt we think, we can make something out of it.

I really liked when Obama mentioned real students that struggle with problems but are still working hard. This inspires me to work harder because they are similar to me.

I put my last responce in the wrong blog part so sorry about that. i don't like what Obama has done so far i don't belive in being able to have an abortion i think it is concidered as murder and plus you don't give the unborn baby a chance to live. there are other things about him that i can't put down..... so i don't really pay attention to his words or speeches because i don't agree with him

I really liked President Obama's because it was interesting for what he had to say to us. It told a lot of students to never give up in school.

I feel really lucky now because I go to school and don't have to wake up at 4:30 in the morning so my mom can teach me. Aso, a golden line for me was when obamas mom would say " this is no picnic for me either, buster."

I thought that Obama was going to talk about how we could do in school, but it turned out to be that we should set up goals for ourselves & never give up, keep on trying.

I did not like that Obama just talked about our responsibilities as students, and as teachers. He did not talk about His responsibilities he has for us.

I felt bad for him when he talks about how he lost his dad and how it was hard for his mother to take care of him
