Write a reflection about the dialogue. You may use the following questions to guide your response.  Write 100-150 words.

    ·      What was the most interesting question asked during the dialogue?

    ·      What was the most interesting or thoughtful idea?

    ·      What did you learn about the text?

    ·      How did you participate?  Do you like what you said?  Do you wish you said something differently?

    ·      What did you learn about how to have a good dialogue?

    ·      Do you think Socratic seminars are a good way to learn?  Why or why not?

    ·      Would you like to try this activity again?  If so, what would you do differently?

     Analyzing an Image
When you analyze something you break the subject down into various parts and you explain them. The goal is to come to a deeper understanding of the subject.  Practice your analyzing skills with the image from The New Yorker magazine I have linked below.  Use the cognitive strategies and the responses of your peers to come to try to understand what it means.
    1) Study the image at the following link:http://archives.newyorker.com/?i=2009-09-07
    2) Write a response to the image.  You may use the following cognitive strategies to respond:

    Make Connections
    This reminds me of..
    This is similar to...
I can relate to that because...
    Make interpretations
The artist might be trying to say.
    The message may be...
    This means...
    Evaluate
    I like/dislike this image because...
    My opinion is...
    Ask Questions
    I wonder why...
    Does this mean...?
One question I have for the artist is...

My period 1 class was able to watch President Obama's speech in class.  Also, many students watched the speech in their social studies classes.  I'm interested in hearing your ideas about the speech.  Please use your "Cognitive Strategies" from class to write a comment (or comments).  You may also comment on what another student wrote.

The White House website has a copy of the speech or you can stream it Online.  If you'd like to reread the speech, click the following link:

Here are some cognitive strategies that may work for your response.  You may use these sentence beginnings or your own ideas:
    Evaluate:
    What I like/dislike about the text is ______________ because…
    My opinion is ______ because…
    The most important message is…

    Ask Questions:
    I wonder why…
    Does this mean…
    What about…

    Analyze the Author's Craft:
A golden line for me is…
This word/phrase _______ stands out for me because…
I like how the speaker uses ______ to show…

    Example:
One golden line for me is when President Obama says, "I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself."  I liked that part because I agree with him. We have to meet the goals we set for ourselves in order to be successful.  We can't depend on other people to do our work for us.

REMEMBER You are required to respond online at least 1 time each quarter.  However, you are encouraged to respond more often.

    Option 1:
Read the following quote by Willa Cather.  In your response, write what you think the quote means.  Next, say why it is important to your work as a student.

    Option 2:
If students have already commented on the quote, you may decide to write in response to something someone else has said.

"Most of the best material a writer works with is acquired before the age of fifteen."  - Willa Cather (author of My Antonia)
