    Today we were challenged to use everything we know about arithmetic and algebra.  We had to transform formulas with little or no constants and indicate restrictions. Please remember to use all of the laws of exponents and show all of your work.

    Today we used three of the Rule of Exponents, along with the Distributive Property to simplify expressions.  Remember that when you:
     
    a) multiply two powers having the same base, you add the exponents.
    b) find a power of a power, you multiply the exponents.
    c) find a power of a product, you find the power of each factor and then multiply.
     

    Problem of The Day:
     
    TV sets are manufactured so that their length-to-width ratio is a constant.  Their sizes represent the length of  the diagonal of the screen.  By what percent is the viewing area increased if you buy a 42-inch TV rather than a 37-inch TV?  Express your answer to the nearest tenth.

    Today we familiarized ourselves with the vocabulary of polynomials.  Please learn the language along with the usage of the concepts. When subtracting, please remember to distribute the negative sign to all monomials in a polynomial.
     
    You should have memorized all of your powers by September 30th.  We will be using them for the rest of the year.
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    The cost of 3 dings is the same as the cost of 5 bings, and 8 bings cost five times as much as 7 lings.  What is the ratio of the cost of a ling to the cost of a ding? Express your answer as a common fraction.

    Today we continued solving word problems involving cost and value, and also added income problems.  Remember to multiply the number of coins, amount of time or tickets by the value of the coins, wage or tickets to get the total cost, total income or total value.  We will continue to use charts or drawings when shapes are involved.
     
    If you have questions on your Portfolio Project, now is the time to ask.  It is due Thursday.
     
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    John takes one step every second, and each step is 33 inches long. There are 5280 feet in mile. How fast, in miles per hour, does John walk? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.

    Today we learned to use charts and diagrams to solve word problems. Please remember to designate the unknowns and utilize the facts to set up the equations. 
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    In how many different ways can 10 be written as a sum using only the numbers 1, 3, and 5? Note that 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 and 1 + 3 + 3 + 3 are two different ways that should be included.

    We are continuing our work with word problems. Remember to label the facts and the unknowns in order to write an equation.  We will be using everything that we have practiced, so be prepared for any kind of equation. Use drawings when shapes are involved. When you are finished solving the equation, go back and read the problem and give the necessary information, including units.
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    The mean of three numbers is 70. When the smallest of the three numbers is replaced by 75, the mean is increased by five.  What was the number that was replaced by 75?

    Today we began solving word problems using algebraic equations with one variable.  Remember to identify all of the facts along with the unknowns to create your equations. Don't forget to go back and re-read the word problem to ensure that you are answering the actual question that is being asked...
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    On a 3 hour, 30 minute entrance exam for a private high school, there are 150 questions. There are 60 math questions and 90 English questions. Twice as much time is given for each math question as is given for each English question.  How much time, in hours, is given for the 60 math questions?

    Today we solved equations by using all of the transformations that we have worked on so far. Be sure to check all of your answers by substituting the solution for the variable.
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    Phil purchases a book.  After receiving a 20% discount off of the listed price of the book, a tax of 7.5% is added.  His final bill comes to $30.96.  What was the listed price of the book? (Use equations to help you solve.)
