    Transforming Equations: Addition & Subtraction

    Great job on your chapter 2 exam!
     
    Today we began transforming equations using both the addition property of equality and the subtraction property of equality.
     
    We also learned that when you solve an equation, you get a number, not another equation. In other words, all answers must be in solution sets {7}, not in the form x = 7.
     
    Do your best on the word problems.  You have all of the necessary tools, just write down everything that you do know, and you will be on your way.  E-mail me or blog, if you need help.
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    The mean of the ages of 20 students is 16.3 years.  If three of them are 18 years old, what is the mean of the ages of the remaining 17 students?

    Dividing Real Numbers

    Today we learned that to divide by a nonzero number, we simply multiply by its reciprocal.  Remember that zero has no reciprocal, so we can not divide by zero.
     
    Please review for your exam this weekend. We will have an in-class review on Monday.
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    On a particular cube, one face is white, two faces are green, and the rest of the faces are red.  If the total area of the red faces is 21 square inches, what is the area of the white face?

    Consecutive Integers & Reciprocals

    Yesterday we began a review of consecutive integers and today we reviewed reciprocals. 
     
    Go slowly when setting up equations for consecutive integers and remember to look for the clue words, consecutive, even or odd.
     
    Memorize and be able to use the property of reciprocals. Be cautious with zero - it has no reciprocal.
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    John is twice as old as his son.  In 42 years, the ratio of their ages will be 4:3.  What is the son's current age?

    Rules for Multiplication

    Today we reviewed the rules for multiplication. Please remember the mulitiplicative properties of -1 and 0, the identity property and the identity element, along with the property of opposites and what happens to positive and negative integers when they are multiplied together.
     
    Watch your signs!!
     
    Problem of The Day:
     
    The following equation was written on the chalkboard:
     
    � + � + § + ¤ - � = Œ.
     
    If � = 4, ¤ = 3, and Œ = 12, what is the value of  § ?

    The Distributive Property

    Today we began review on the Distributive Property of Multiplication with respect to both addition and subtraction.  Watch subtraction and be especially careful of negative integers.
     
     Problem of the Day:
     
    I need to measure a paperclip but I only have a broken-off ruler which begins measurement at
    1-3/4 cm.  If I place one end of the paperclip at the first mark on the ruler, the other end stops at
    4-1/4 cm.  How long is the paperclip?

    Subtracting Real Numbers

    Remember, the definition of subtraction is to add the opposite. Simplify & order, simplify & order, simplify & order!!!

    Starting at L and proceeding downward diagonally either left or right to each subsequent letter, how many different paths spell the word LAPS?

    Rules for Addition

    Today we reviewed the rules for addition of all real numbers, specifically for integers. Please remember to write down all of the information you know before attempting the word problems.
     
     
    Problem of the Day:
     
    In a race with five people, Betty finished ahead of David, and the same number of people finished before Betty that finished after David. Adam finished before Charles, and Betty finished after Edward. Who finished in 3rd place?

    Addition On A Number Line

    Today we utilized both the Identity Property of Addition and the Properties of Opposites.  Please write them in your flip chart to help you become familiar with these properties.
     
    Problem of the Day:
     
    Of the 160 students in the seventh grade at Franklin Middle Sc
    hool, one-half of them belong to Drama Club.  Of those, only ten participate in just Drama Club, while the rest also participate in Chorus.  Only 30 of the seventh graders do not participate in either Chorus or Drama Club.  How many seventh graders participate in only Chorus?

    Basic Assumptions

    Today we began working with real numbers, specifically the properties involving equality, addition and multiplication. Please begin to familiarize yourself with each property and learn how they work within algebraic expressions and equations.  You will be tested on all of the properties at the end of this chapter. Flashcards or flip sheets would be helpful.
     
    Problem of the Day:
    Tom rides the bus part of the way to school and then he walks the rest of the way.  He walks five minutes longer than he rides.  The whole trip takes 27 minutes.  For how many minutes does he walk?

    Introduction to Algebra Review

    {Thanks to all of you for helping to celebrate my birthday in style!  I loved the ginormous card, the wonderful singing, and all of your thoughtful wishes}
     
    Your first exam is this Monday, September 14th.
     
    Study points:
    1.1: Substitution Principle (p.2), simplify & evaluate expressions, PEMDAS!!
    1.2: Simplify & evaluate expressions with grouping symbols.
    1.3: Solve equations over solution sets
    1.4-1.7: Translate words into symbols, sentences, & equations. Solve word problems. Know formulas for perimeter and area for circles, squares, rectangles, & triangles.(Trapezoids will not be on this exam, but you are responsible for knowing their formulas, too).
    1.8: Definitions and representations of Integers, Whole Numbers, & Real Numbers (p.31-32). Be able to order integers and real numbers. Translate sentences into Inequalities.
    1.9: Solve & simplify absolute value expressions & equations.
     
    Please note: the exam is not limited to only these study points.  The study points are designed to help you review. You are expected to demonstrate knowledge for all of the concepts that we covered in the past two weeks.
     
    There is no POD today.
