We love the series by Blue Balliet:
    1. Chasing Vermeer
    2. The Wright Three
    3. The Calder Game

They are mysteries centered around art or architecture with both a hero and heroine so they will appeal to both boys and girls!

and for girls we keep rereading Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl, Enna Burning and River Secrets (as well as The Princess Academy)

  • Kelly Langston (Molly's Mom)

I agree with Taylor's mom about Shannon Hale's books. "The Goose Girl" is especially good and her writing style is almost lyrical. Molly and I enjoyed all three of those books immensely. I have read a lot of books to Molly, and others we have really enjoyed are:
The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende, The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull (there are 3 so far), The Alchemyst and The Magician by Michael Scott, The Sister's Grimm series by Michael Buckley - I think boys and girls will like this because even though initially the main characters are 2 sisters, there is a main character who is a very mischievious boy introduced - this is a mystery/fantasy/twist on fairy tale series. There are 6 so far, and you should read them in order. They are very clever and funny.
Those are some of the books that, off the top of my head, I have enjoyed reading with Molly. They are mostly fantasy type books and I would say there is no inappropriate language or content in any of them, even though some of them are considered Young Adult novels and not juvenile. ENJOY!!!

Oh....one other author we have read quite a bit this year is a man called Jim Kjellgaard. Molly's dad actually read his books when he was growing up (which was ages ago!). He writes realistic fiction (sometimes very much so), usually about wildlife, survival and things like that. His writing is VERY descriptive and vivid. These are probably books boys would enjoy more than girls, although Molly did enjoy them. But I doubt we would have read them had Molly's dad not mentioned this particular author. We are glad we did, though. I am guessing that they are along the same vein as "Hatchet" - the main character is typically a young man - late teens, early twenties - using his wits to survive and thrive, often times in a wilderness situation. If you have any interest in things like that, you may enjoy these books. Jim Kjellgaard has written quite a few and most are available at the Alachua County Library.

I agree with Janelle! I LOVED the Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane. It was such a good story about learning to care and loves others and not to be so self-absorbed with your own importance. Just be sure to have a tissue or two handy! :)

I just finished a great book called AN OCEAN APART, A WORLD AWAY by Lensey Namioka. It is about a Chinese girl who comes to America to study medicine in a time period when women were expected to focus on housework and raising children. There are many instances of stereotyping, and the main characters goes through lots of changes throughout the story. It's a great read!

So, I'm reading "Holes" by Louis Sachar to Molly (and her Daddy!). If you haven't seen the movie, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend reading the book. If you've seen the movie, it will take away the surprise when you read the book. The connections in the book are amazing, and as you get into the story, you will want to keep on reading. Louis Sachar does an excellent job of weaving the story and surprising you. It is easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. Molly's Dad even made me read it to HIM the other night after Molly went to bed because he wanted to find out what was going to happen! Smile Now THAT'S a good book!

one AWESOME book that alot of people would recomend is stumptown kid . It has alot of adventure and it is so cool.plus it is was a sunshine book.

    4/13/2009 4:31:01 PM
  • Mr. Goodman (Steven's dad)

Little late to the party here, but I will agree with Divya, I thought Sounder was a great book. Mr. Armstrong manages to squeeze a lot of detail and imagery into a fairly short story. I read this book many (too many!!) years ago, and had forgotten most of the details other than the dog dying, so I was expecting a rather difficult and sad story. The first part of the book more or less met those expectations. But towards the end of the book, the mood of despair gave way to a feeling of hope that there was opportunity and good in the world, and that was a pleaseant surprise for me. Definitly a good read.

    4/15/2009 8:20:13 PM
  • Betty Osfield (Emma's Mom)

For all you girls.. and maybe some of the boys :o) we love to read the candy apple books. Mrs. Geiger refers to certain types of books as "brain candy". These books are definitely "brain candy".. They are quick, easy, light reading. Always fun and enjoyable.. kind of like a disney movie!
We are also now reading How to Steal a Dog that is great so far, Friendship According to Humphrey.. gotta LOVE LOVE LOVE that little guy!

    4/28/2009 10:55:29 PM
  • Betty Osfield (Emma's Mom)

Now for the boys (and some of the girls too!)... Kyle (Emma's big brother) and I are currently reading Snakehead. This is the latest book in the Alex Rider series written by Anthony Harowitz. Alex is like a young James Bond, who has gotten drawn into becoming a spy for MI6, British Intelligence. They are really good books. When I read the first book,Stormbreaker, I couldn't put it down!

    4/28/2009 11:00:08 PM

Escaping the giant wave is an AWESOME book!! It's about a boy who's on a vacation with his family and thinks his going to have the best vacation ever! But he's wrong. When he's babysitting his younger sister Beebee at their hotel eating pizza and milkshakes, there was a earthquake and fire at the same time. When they get out of they're hotel they go to the top of the hill because they remembered a sign that said a tsunami might follow. But they're friend doesn't go up, because a lot of times the tsunami warning was a false alarm. If you want to find out what happens you have to read the book!!!!!

The book Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is very enthralling. It is about a girl named Emmy and a rat who is very mysterious in the beginning. Emmy does not want to be a goody-two shoes anymore so she sits by the rat to learn to be naughty. She also has no friends. When she meets a boy named Joe she becomes friends with him and the rat. Joe realizes that if you get one bite from the rat you can hear him. If you get a second bite, you shrink to the size of him. I think this book is a tantalizing adventure that i will never forget!
