POSTED AT 04:04 PM

Dear Recycling Club Members,
I decided to set up this blog so that we can share ideas between meetings. When you visit the blog you can read entries posted by other members, respond to their posts, and/or add entries of your own.

To read the comments, click on the link below right that says "1 comment." (This number will change, of course, as more comments are added!) If you want to post your own comment click on "post comment." Make sure you click the "Save Post" before exiting.

I think this will be a great way to keep our brainstorming going until we actually get together again. Let's see how it works! Mrs. Geiger

Just to let you know... Mrs. Langston and I submitted a $500 grant yesterday to Gainesville Regional Utilities. Keep your fingers crossed that we get it! If so, maybe we could go ahead and purchase some bottle and can recycling bins. This seemed to be a popular idea among the club members. We will keep you posted!

  • All! I just found this interesting trivia about how long it takes for these items to decompose/break down.
    Mrs. Langston

    HA banana peel? 3-4 weeks

    A paper bag? 1 month

    A cotton rag? 5 months

A piece of wood? 10-15 years

    A leather shoe? 40-50 years

    A tin can? 80-100 years

    An aluminum can? 200-500 years

    Disposable diapers? 500-600 years

A plastic jug? 1 million years
P.S. Did you know that Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour?!

    Glass bottle? unknown

Styrofoam, like a "clam shell" sandwich container? It will last forever! i,

  • dear mrs.geiger you and mrs.langston have a ecstatic idea i think everybody will absolutely love it from:jamazz

  • At the carnival we can do activities like a race. For example, the kids have a pile of trash and they race to see who gets all the trash in the garbage first, gets two candies of their choosing. - Lauren

  • DEAR MRS.GEIGER THIS WILL BE SO EXCITING FROM:JAMAZZ

Ms. Mattison had the idea that we have a booth at carnival. A couple of folks have already posted ideas for what that could be. Any other ideas?

    2/28/2009 8:25:11 PM
  • dear mrs.geiger at the carnival we can have game when you can throw the trash at the bottles and if you nock them down you win a prize.mrs.geiger what time does the carnival start? what time should we come?

    2/28/2009 9:21:48 PM
  • I really like the trash can race idea that Lauren posted. We can have three separate cans, one for waste, one for aluminum recyclables, and one for paper. Each person will have to race the clock to put all the items in the correct bin to win.
We can also display a poster with Mrs.Langston's facts about decomposing. I think most people don't realize how long all those materials last in the land fill!
We may even be able to get more parents to be a part of the club during the carnival, this way we can get more help for these projects we want to start.

    3/1/2009 12:21:57 PM
  • Dear Mrs Geiger,
An idea for the booth can be we hand out pins that say "I CARE DO YOU?" on them.

    3/1/2009 3:06:23 PM
  • dear mrs.geiger what time should we come to the carnival? when is the carnival?

  • Boys & Girls, the carnival begins at 4:00 on March 26th. I love some of these ideas for a booth at the carnival, but we might also need some parents to help us out.

If you went to the Tiger Trot on Saturday the 28th, you saw that there were lots of trash bins. I collected as many of the plastic water bottles I could and have them in a big bag. Put your thinking caps on and start being artistic!! Can we make a mascot with plastic bottles?!? :)

    Mrs. Langston

    3/2/2009 10:23:12 AM
  • Dear Mrs.Geiger,
For the carnival we can make recycling bins for all the plastic and cans that we use.
    Divya

    3/2/2009 1:57:11 PM
  • Dear Mrs Geiger,
Another idea for the booth is we can hand out cup cakes that have the recycling sign on it. It can be green frosting so they know to go green.

  • Dear Mrs Geiger,
I think the Recycling Club is one of the best things to happen in Talbot!!!!!!!! I`m so happy to be in it!!!!

    3/2/2009 4:26:41 PM
  • Dear Mrs Geiger,
I think we should make posters for the school and hang them around Talbot. In building 1, 2, and 3.

    3/2/2009 4:28:40 PM
  • dear mrs. geiger i think we should hand out free recycling toys at the carnival from:jamazz

    3/2/2009 5:02:15 PM
  • we should do stuff like recycle all around the school not just on the playground but wait the playground is the only pace to pick up trash

  • Hello! Any of you who have parents who would like to help us at the carnival, we'd really like some volunteers!
If you would ask your parents, we could set up 30 minute shifts for them at the booth so we can keep it running smoothly.
    Thanks!
    <3 Ms. Mattison

    3/4/2009 8:09:05 AM
  • Another idea I kind of adapted from Jamazz:

Maybe we can have a small toy drive and let people coming to the fair know that we will be collecting toys to "recycle". We can have a bin where kids can bring toys they don't use anymore (gently used of course) and then donate them to kids in need. WHat do you think??
    -Ms. Mattison

    3/4/2009 1:36:10 PM
  • we should make those t-shirts sometime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3/4/2009 6:39:15 PM
  • mrs.geiger. i was the one who came up with the idea about nocking the bottles down. I feel really aprreciated that you think that was a wonderful idea.FROM:JAMAZZ

    3/4/2009 8:27:03 PM
  • Mrs Geiger I think we could have a educationly booth that gives out facts. Like we could call Gru for a bue recycle bin manget that lists stuff you could recycle. From Will.

    3/7/2009 4:23:23 PM
  • Mrs Geiger,
I too like the idea that Jamazz came up with. Handing out recycling toys is a good idea.

Hi, everyone! I LOVE all the excitement that you all are expressing about the recycling club, the carnival, and "going green!" Ms. Mattison, Mrs. Langston, and I are going to meet tomorrow to see what our next steps are. We will ALL meet again as a club next week on March 24th. I can't wait until we all get together again to start implementing all the wonderful ideas you generated. By then we'll have some definite ideas for the carnival and hopefully we will know if we got the $500 grant. Thanks again for all the enthusiasm!!!! Mrs. Geiger

Hi, Jamazz... How much were the bins at Wal-Mart, do you remember? Also, were they for recycling cans/bottles? If we can get a better deal at Wal-Mart than Lowe's or Home Depot, I'm all for that! --Mrs. Geiger

    3/24/2009 8:18:06 PM
  • Hi kids! Thanks for such a productive meeting yesterday afternoonSmileIt's great to see so many of you are excited about being in the club. The more enthusiatic you are about recycling, the more likely other kids will want to follow in your footsteps, so GOOD JOB!

Remember, you may want to start drafting an idea for the next Talbot T shirt. We're trying to get as many kids in the club as possible to make the shirt theme more "green". Some suggestions I heard yesterday for drawings were:
A "green" tiger out in nature or cleaning up the school.
Talbot kids planting trees and recycling objects.
A slogan about how Talbot is "going green".

You are more than welcome to share your ideas here too!
    Love,
    Ms. Mattison

At our next meeting ( Tuesday 4/21), we are going to ask as many of you as possible to draw "green" t-shirt designs to enter into the Talbot t-shirt design contest. That way, hopefully we'll have a better chance of getting a t-shirt that will show Talbot spirit while at the same time promoting recycling, etc. Mrs. Geiger

Anyone who would like to stop by before school on Wednesday or Thursday next week or afterschool on Wednesday next week to help get the juice pouches ready to ship, I would LOVE your help! We now have a much easier, LESS STINKY, system, and as a team, it should go pretty quickly. So far, I have put 164 in the box to be shipped, and that's just a drop in the bucket (no pun intended!). Anyone want to take a shot at estimating the total number we have at this point? AND we're getting more and more in the lunch room every day! Now that we are figuring out a better procedure for processing them, we will get more and more efficient. A BIG STICKY THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in on Tuesday and during recess today. YOU ALL ARE THE BOMB! -- Mrs. Geiger

    4/23/2009 6:49:46 PM
  • i think that for the shirt, we could put on:
RECYCLE TO HAVE A CLEAN AND GREEN WORLD.
    Or something like that.

  • Their is a huge pile-up of juice boxes, Mrs. Geigers students will need to pitch in during their class time to get it done. Thanks to anyone who helped. I hope you continue to recycle over summer. I'm ready to be back in the club next year and have more members. Our goal is to make Talbot a " greener" school. We can do it! Anyway, Go Green and stay green, it is our job! HAGSARTR! [have-a-great-summer-and- remember-to-recycle] Bye,

  • Hey mrs. geiger, do you know if those juice BOXES ( ya know, the 3-d ones not the flat kind) can be recycled????? I was just wondering because i don't get those flat kind any more, and neither does a few other people so i thought we could get another box for those to. LATER! Darby Emery
