Winter Literacy Day- Winter Literacy Day was a huge success! The students had a wonderful time traveling through each station.  A sheet came home with your child, on Friday that explained, in detail, what each center consisted of. Ask your child about their favorite activity.

Holiday Party- Please make sure you check your child's GATOR Notebook for a letter regarding our class holiday party. The holiday party will be this coming Thursday, December 17th from 1:15-2:00. I have assigned each child an item to bring in to help with our party.  If you are unable to send in your item, please let me know so we can plan accordingly. We are also asking for a “wrapped” age appropriate book ($5.00 or less) for our class book exchange. You may send in your assigned item/book in anytime before Thursday if you like.

End of the 2nd Nine Weeks- We are wrapping up our second nine weeks in first grade. We will be having several paper/pencil assessments the next few days to check student's understanding and mastery of standards. Please continue to read as often as you can with your student. Practice modeling fluency of text and voice expression as you read aloud with your child. Please keep in mind that reading not only involves recall of words, but also comprehension. We have really been working on independent story comprehension this marking period. Every time your child finishes a book, he/she should be able to tell you about the main characters, the setting, the story problem and the solution. As your child retells the story to you, events should be sequential and major details should be recalled. If you notice your child has difficultly with these comprehension elements, the text they have selected is too hard. Please keep in mind that nonfiction text is more difficult to comprehend than fiction.

Math - This week, we spent time reviewing different types of graphs. Students worked on creating bar graphs, picture graphs, and tally tables. Next week, we will spend some time reviewing skip counting, using a number line and addition and subtraction to 12. The children have the most difficultly with skip counting patterns that go backwards. For example ___, 86,84,__,__,__, 76,__ Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts to 12 at home. The children need to recall facts with ease. They need to practice counting money amounts up to 50 cents with mixed amounts of coins and 20 dollars with mixed bill amounts.

Language Arts/Phonics/Words Their Way- In language arts we continued with our assigned story of the week. We read the story Whistle for Willie. We continued to learn about main and minor characters, primary and secondary settings, and identifying the relationships between the characters. In phonics and Words Their Way, we continue to work on blending short vowel words with and without blends smoothly. We have been discussing and reading long vowel words that end with the silent e or “Magic E”. We are learning about the s, l and r blends. Most everyone has mastered our sight words for this nine week period! Way to go!

Writing- We have been working on writing pattern books.  The students learned that you repeat the pattern of words on each page.  They have learned that pattern books are easy and fun to write.  This week we will continue to work on writing and reading pattern books.

Social Studies- This week in Social Studies we finished our unit on Thomas Jefferson. Students learned many important things about his contributions to our country. Ask your child to tell you a fact they learned about him. This week we will begin learning about Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea.

    What’s Happening in Room 108?

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We had a very
busy week with lots of learning going on. The next two weeks will continue to be busy and very productive as we finish up our second nine weeks of
learning. Today, the students brought home a family project to be
completed. Please take the time to work with your child in completing
this project. Tomorrow, the students will be bringing home a letter about
Winter Literacy Day. This is a fun curriculum-filled day. The students will
rotate for half of the day, so that they are in 6 different first grade
classrooms by lunchtime. Each classroom integrates language arts, and in
some cases other subjects, into the activities. The standards-based learning
activities center around a "Polar Express" theme. The children have permission to wear pajamas to school that day as they become immersed in learning through fun, hands-on experiences. Please make sure to send in your assigned item to help make our day a success.

*Please be on the look out for information regarding our holiday party. *

Math: EQ: How can I make fair trades using combinations of coins to 50 cents? This week we revisited counting money. Students practiced making amounts to 50 cents. Students worked with a partner to complete a money exemplar where they had to figure out what coins were used to make 47 cents. They were given the total amount of coins used, but needed to figure out which combination of coins equaled 47 cents. They represented their answers using pictures, words, and numbers. They also compared amounts of money using greater than, less than, and equal to. Please work with your child at home to reinforce making combinations to 50 cents.

Language Arts:  EQ: How can understanding story elements help me become a better reader?
We worked on reading to find the main character, setting, problem, and solution of a story.  These are all important elements that can be found in most good stories. Being able to identify these elements helps readers develop better reading comprehension. This week’s story was The Little Red Hen Makes Pizza.  The students created their own pizza slice which incorporated the story elements.  Ask your child what each part of their pizza represented. To sum up our week of story elements, we made our own mini pizzas to enjoy!

We also learned what cause and effect is. Students listened to the story Are You Grumpy Santa and learned how to identify the cause and effect in the story. We created a class Multi Flow Map, which is one of our thinking map graphic organizers, to display our understanding of cause and effect. Students learned that the “cause” in a story is what makes something happen and the “effect” is what happens.

Writing: EQ: How can I use patterns to help me become a better writer? We learned that patterns are not just for math.  You can actually find and use patterns in your reading and writing. We read and looked for patterns in books. Then we learned how easy it is to write using a pattern.  We made a class book this week.  Next week students will have the chance to make their own pattern book.

Social Studies: EQ: Why is Thomas Jefferson an important historical figure? This week we began to learn about Thomas Jefferson. We made a KWL chart about Thomas Jefferson and created a timeline of his important life events. Next week we will learn about the Declaration of Independence and why the 13 colonies were important.

    Reminders:

    * Please make sure your child is reading their Reader’s Theater scripts daily. Make sure they are returned on Friday so students can perform them for the class.

    * Please send in your assigned Winter Literacy Day item by Thursday.

    Math:
EQ- Why are shapes important?  What shapes do I see every day?

This week we began our unit on shapes. We reviewed what a plane shape was (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, and hexagon) and talked about how many sides and corners these shapes have. Students “built” these shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks and they used pattern blocks to create their own shape picture. We also learned what a 3 dimensional shape was (cube, cone, cylinder, rectangular prism, and sphere). Students will begin rotating through geometry centers next week.

Language Arts: EQ: How do I use what I know to understand how stories work?

This week’s story focused on using pictures to predict story words and how to use clues to figure out new words and concepts. Students often encounter new words as they read. By using the words they know and other clues, they can figure out these words connect with what they are reading. We also reviewed the digraphs (sh, th, ch, wh) and the blends (cl, pl, fl, and bl). Next week we will learn about compound words and how to use a dictionary to look up words.

Writing- EQ: How can we add details to our personal narrative?

This week in writing we continued to learn about personal narratives. We learned that adding details, like describing words and phrases, make our writing more interesting. Students also wrote a turkey story as if they were the turkey that might be eaten for Thanksgiving Dinner. They used great “hooks” to get the readers attention!

Science- EQ What will a magnet attract and repel?
This week in science students began to learn about magnets. Students learned that magnets have a north and a south pole. They learned what the words attract and repel mean. Students used magnets to find things in the room that would attract and repel a magnet. Students also made predictions about what items magnets would attract and repel. They tested their predictions and glued their pictures accordingly.

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN

I hope that your child has a safe and happy Halloween. Thank you for donating the pumpkins for Pumpkin Day. Students completed various activities about pumpkins today. They measured, weighed and tested their predictions to see if a pumpkin would sink or float in water. They created a pumpkin glyph, and even made an edible pumpkin treat! They also decorated a mini pumpkin to bring home. Ask your child about their favorite activity!

Donations needed for our room: We have several activities coming up that will require some extra supplies. I would be grateful for any donations that you are able to make.

    ~gumdrops

    ~tooth picks

    ~mini marshmallows

    ~paper plates

    ~Styrofoam bowls

Math: EQ- How can a number line help me add and subtract numbers? What do the words skip counting mean? This week we worked on counting forward and backwards on a number line. Students learned that this strategy will help them when they are adding and subtracting numbers. We also practiced skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Some students are still struggling with counting by 2’s. We will continue to practice during our calendar time. Please reinforce this concept with your child at home as well.  Next week we will begin our geometry unit.

Language Arts: EQ: How can making connections help me become a better reader?

This week in language arts we learned that “good readers” make connections to what they are reading.

We learned that as you make connections during your reading, STOP and THINK about how they help you deepen your understanding of the text.

T-T (text to text) How does the text remind you of another text?

T-S (text to self) How does the text remind you of your life?

T-W(text to world) How does the text remind you of the

    world?

We also talked about blends and digraphs. Students went on a digraph hunt. They looked for words around the room and in their book boxes that began with or ended with sh,th,wh,ch. We made a tree map of blends ((bl,pl,cl,sl) and talked about how they help us when we are sounding out are words.

Writing- EQ: What is a personal narrative?

This week in writing students began to learn that a personal narrative is a story about their own lives. They learned that the words I, me, my, and mine are words that are used in a personal narrative. Students brainstormed possible topics to write about and they learned how to narrow their topic down to write about one event. Next week, students will begin to write a narrative on their chosen topic.

Social Studies- EQ: How has Benjamin Franklin contributed to our world today?

We continued to learn about Benjamin Franklin this week. We talked about Franklin’s character traits, his famous quotes, and how his inventions are used in our lives today. On Monday, we will have a first grade museum tour of their projects as an ending to our unit on Benjamin Franklin. Students will get to see how other first grade students celebrate the life of Benjamin Franklin.

Science: EQ: How are magnets important in our daily life?

Next week we will begin our unit on magnets.

    WHATS HAPPENING IN OUR ROOM?

What We Worked On This Week:

We had another exciting week in Room 108! Thank you to our garden mom, Mrs. Spencer, for helping us clean out our garden plot! On Tuesday, we were able to clean out our garden and plant pansies and bulbs. Students really enjoyed planting flowers and our garden plot looks BEAUTIFUL! If you have an opportunity to go by and check it out, please do! We are very proud of it and would not have been able to do it without Mrs. Spencers help!

We also worked on our scarecrow for the Fall Festival. Students worked together and with Mrs. Spencer to put our recycled materials to work. Thank you for sending in recycled materials for our scarecrow!

Math- EQ: How can I make fair trades with coins to 30 cents? Students completed money centers this week and will complete their money assessment on Monday. We will spend next week working on subtraction, greater than/less than, and fact families.

Language Arts- EQ: How do I become a great reader? This week's story entitled "Eat Your Vegetables," was an informational story where the author tried to persuade the reader to eat vegetables. We talked about different kinds of vegetables and why they are important to eat. The students made vegetable riddles and created a vegetable picture, on the computer, and wrote about it.  This story ties in great with our Cooperation Soup we will make on Monday.

    Writing
    -
EQ:What does a good writer look like in our classroom?  Everyone should be using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, proper spacing between words, and correct punctuation at the end of a sentence.  When your child practices writing at home make sure you are seeing these things!
We are beginning to work on writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.  One of the first things a good writer does is select a topic. Then the writer must think of the details to be included in the story. To help us organize our thoughts we will learn to use a graphic organizer.

Social Studies- EQ: What are landforms? This week the students learned about the six different landforms. We watched a video streaming video about landforms and the students created a flip book where they illustrated each landform. Our next topic in Social Studies will Benjamin Franklin. Be on the lookout for a take home project about Ben Franklin!

    Reminders:
    1. Please remember to send in your item for our Cooperation Soup!
    2. PLEASE work with your child on their weekly spelling words. After this weeks spelling test, I realized that a lot of students are not practicing their words at home.

    WHATS HAPPENING IN OUR ROOM?

What We Worked On This Week:

Wow! What a week! Even though we had a short week, we were very busy!
I am glad to hear that everyone survived the floods this week. I am sure you are aware that others were not so fortunate. We will be donating school supplies to the students of Clarkdale Elementary this week. If you have any supplies at home or would like to help donate please let me know.

    Math:
EQ: How can I make fair trades with coins to 30 cents?
We will begin rotating through money centers on Monday, with the hopes of finishing those by the end of the week. Please remember to work with your child at home as well. They need to be able to make fair trades up to 30 cents by the end of this nine weeks.

Language Arts: EQ: How do I become a great reader?
This week we read a story about Shadows. We focused on making predictions. We took a picture walk through the story to help us understand that pictures help us make predictions about the book. Students shared their predictions by talking and turning to their partners. We also talked about main idea. When you are reading at home with your child, have them make a prediction about the story and tell you the main idea and setting.

Social Studies: EQ: What is my global address?
This week we continued working on our address, city, county, state, country and continent.  Next week we will label and identify the seven continents and oceans on a map and learn two songs to help us remember them. We will also begin our landform study. Students need to be able to describe mountins, deserts, valleys, plains, plateaus, and coasts.

Apple Day:  EQ: How did Johnny Appleseed contribute to our country?
Apple Day was a huge success! We worked with Mrs. Hossenlopps class to complete several activities about Johnny Appleseed and apples. The students solved apple word problems, used their 5 senses to do an apple investigation, made a class tally chart, took the information from the tally chart to create their own bar graph, and made up a question that could be answered about their graphs. We also had an apple taste test, drank warm apple cider, and sampled apple sauce. Ask your child to tell you some "facts" they learned about Johnny Appleseed!

Spelling: I was so excited to see how well the students did with their spelling words this week! I could really tell that you worked with them at home and completed the spelling activities. On Thursdays, I will give the students a spelling pre-test. If they spell all of their words correctly they will not have to take the spelling test Friday. You will see the pre-test come home on Thursdays and know whether your child needs to practice a little more.  You can also check out the website www.spellingcity.com. You can type in your child's spelling words and choose an activity to do with them. This would count as one of the activities for the week.

    Thank you!
    1. Thank you parents for sending in apples for Apple Day!
    2. Thank you Mrs. Spencer for agreeing to be our Garden Mom this year. Mrs. Spencer sent home a letting regarding a scarecrow project. If you are able to help out, in any way, please send the items in by Tuesday!

    Reminders:
    1. Please remember to send in items for our class scarecrow!
    2. Don't forget to initial your child's reflection sheet daily and empty out their folder nightly.

    POSTED AT 06:51 PM

    Parents,

I am sure most of you know by now that Cobb County has closed school for Tuesday, September 22, 2009.  Please try to stay dry and safe during this horrific weather.

Below are a few updates from our room:

    1. Today, I sent home spelling words for your child as well as spelling activities that need to be completed with homework. Students should choose two activities to complete each week. Every Friday, the students will have a spelling test. Most of these words are high frequency words that are on the high frequency word list.
    2. Last week students began "Math Minute". This is a timed addition activity to help the students master their addition facts. Students have one minute to complete their sheet accurately.  You will see their sheets coming home daily. I have marked the problem to indicate how far they made it in one minute. As they complete each page they move towards the next level. They are very excited and are really enjoying this new math activity!
    3. Today, we began practicing our address and county. I was very pleased that most of the students knew their address. You can help at home by having them tell you their address, county, state, and continent. Ask them what country we live in, how many continents there are, and the names of the 4 oceans!
    4. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!!!! We have been working hard making fair trades to 30 cents. I would really appreciate it if you could work with your child at home too! Ask your child to show you how "hairy" money works! Each hair stands for 5 cents. They can label their coins with "hair" to help them count.
    5. I have added some items to the Class Wishlist section, so take a look when you have a chance! Mrs. Lighstone, our guidance counselor, has been working on cooperation with the students. We will be making cooperation soup in two weeks so I will be asking for some donations to help make our soup!!

Thanks again for all of your support! We are off to a great start this year!!

    WHATS HAPPENING IN OUR ROOM?

What We Worked On This Week:

    Math
EQ: How can I make fair trades with coins?
This week we began our unit on money. Students began trading pennies for nickels, nickels for dimes, and nickels and dimes for quarters. The students also sorted their coins and created their own bar graph to represent their coins. Next week we will continue making fair trades and begin money centers. Ask your child to sort and count the change in your wallet!

    Language Arts
EQ: How can I read to become a more fluent reader?
This week in language arts we continued to work on a story of the week. The students listened to a story about the cycle of our life and the importance of family. We also began literacy centers this week. Students rotated through "have to" centers and "choice" centers. Beginning next week, I will  meet with students in their guided reading groups while students are at centers.  Ask your child which centers they visited this week.

    Writing
EQ: What does a good writer look like in our classroom?
This week in writing students completed their writing assessment. We also made a class list of topics we could write about and learned that by answering simple questions we can create a story. Students completed the Questions and Answers activity and made their own story.

    Social Studies
EQ: What is my global address?
This week in Social Studies we began our unit entitled "Our Country, Our Earth." We learned about the difference between a map and a globe and we began talking about our city, county, state, nation, and continent. Please review your address and phone number with your child. Ask your child if they can tell you the city, county and state where we live. Next week we will continue learning about these items and began talking about landforms.

    ~REMINDERS~
Library Day- Tuesday is our day to visit the library. Students enjoy a lesson with Mrs. Hailey and also have the chance to check out books. Please help your child remember to bring their library books back so that they can check out new ones when we go to the library.
Baggy Books- Please remember to return baggy books. Students should be checking out new ones a couple times a week.
High Frequency Words- Please continue to practice sight words with your child. I will begin reassessing students in the next couple of weeks. Your child needs to know at least 50 words by the end of the first nine weeks.

This page will be a means of communication with you about things going on in the classroom as well as at school.  It will be updated every week. Of course, if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.  The easiest and quickest way to do that is through my email.  My email address is elizabeth.england@cobbk12.org
