    Dear Parents and Students,

Thank you so much for the notes and delicious snacks this week. You have all done a wonderful job of really making me feel special.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Reaves

Homework tonight is a double sided ecosystems vocabulary puzzle and another page in the math packet. Most students have turned in the completed packet already. I would love to have some feedback about the homework and what seems easier to keep up with. Do you prefer a weekly packet that can be turned in not later than Friday of  that week or would you like to see separate nightly assignments?

I was pleased to see so many students turn in their homework today. Many chose to do the entire math packet rather than spacing it out over the week. I asked those who did not complete the packet to take it back home to so that the work could be continued tonight. The other assignment is to revise and edit the "5 easy pieces" poem we began in class today. The exercise was a bit complicated so if your child has trouble, just have them bring it to class tomorrow for help from me.

Today we hosted a group of 3rd graders from Winnona Park. We had a wonderful time showing them around the school and making crafts. Visits from the other K-3 schools will occur this week but will not involve our class.

We have only a few more days until Field Day! Please send in a plain white t-shirt for your child to decorate for the big event by Thursday of this week.

Today a letter from Sally Dobbins, the School Health Coordinator, was sent home. It describes the health alert concerning the swine flu and ways to prevent infection. Please be sure to ask your child for it tonight.

    Hello All,

After looking over all of the most recent grade reports I noticed that in general the grades seem lower than before. I thought you might like to know why. We report grades every 4 1/2 weeks but the past two weeks of this quarter have been filled with CRCT sessions. That means there were only 2 1/2 weeks worth of grades on this progress report. In short with fewer grades to average, it was harder to pull up a low average. Usually I have many opportunities to teach, assess, and reteach before the next assessment. In this short session some students were not able to master concepts and be retested before the reporting deadline. Fortunately, many chances to pull grades up will be offered in the coming weeks. Please encourage your child to do his or her best on every assignment to maintain a high average or to pull their grades up.

Progress Reports and ways to connect with your child.

    • Progress reports go home today. Please sign and return the report by tomorrow. If you would like to schedule a conference, you can send me an email or call the school at 404.370.4435.
    • A math concept review homework packet was sent home today. Students are asked to bring it to school everyday and complete at least one page each night. The entire packet is due on Friday.
    • Today we studied the Bill of Rights using a Reader's Theater script. Each child has a different part in the script. Please have your child practice his or her part so that we can perform it well. This is a fun way to remember the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Also, ask your child about Shay's Rebellion and the state of the economy in the U.S. in 1786. Ask your child to compare and contrast the current economy to the economy in 1786.
    • We took a pretest for the new Algebra unit in Math. Discuss your experiences with Algebra.

Although testing is over, the school year is not, and we still have new concepts to learn and master. In Math we will be looking at some basics in Algebra, such as finding patterns and using symbols and letters of different values in mathematical expressions. In Social Studies we will finish examining the Constitution and complete the year with a unit on Westward Expansion. In Reading we will continue the author study of Chris Van Allsburg. The unit will culminate with an assignment in which students will act as book critics and write reviews of 3 books they enjoyed reading by the author. An alternate assignment will be to create a matrix that compares and contrasts characters from any three Chris Van Allsburg books. Finally, standards in Science and Writing will be addressed in a final class project within the IB unit. Students will work to educate a community about the changes in the environment and how this affects living organisms. Informational writing skills and the use of technology to support writing will be the focus. The project will be completed in class as opposed to the independent presentation project due by May 20.

Due to set backs during testing, we will extend our IB unit by two weeks and end on Friday, May 8. While the teaching portion will be completed on the 8th, students may still be working on their ecosystems projects at home. Project presentations will run from May 11, through May 20. We would love to have you come and watch your child’s presentation and see all of the hard work that has been done. Please read over the presentation guidelines and help your child sign up for a presentation time that will fit your schedule.
