This week we had our last Jr. Achievement.  We learned about how money moves through our community.  We dressed up as cooks and a laundry mat worker!  It was fun!

We had a substitute yesterday, Mrs. Johnson.

We had extra recess yesterday for filling our sneaker chart.

We are learning about Native Americans.

We also had a mystery reader today!  Lucas' mom read Walter the Farting Dog (and some other stories to us).  It was funny!

This week we got to spend our bucks at the classroom store.  We had Jr. Achievement on Tuesday.  We learned how to vote.  We voted for one of three different mayors that wanted a skate park, animal shelter, or toy store for our community.  Our class picked the animal shelter.  We watched the band perform.  They were awesome!!

We had our first Mystery Reader today...Karma's mom!!!

Please forgive me for not posting more regularly!  I've taken LOTS of pictures and I hope that I have time to get them uploaded soon (after I finish report cards!)

First of all, we have been learning about our Community through Jr. Achievement.  Mrs. Moser (Grace's mom) has been leading us through this series of 5 lessons.  Last week, we pretended to be employees of the Sweet O Doughnut Shop and learned about unit production and assembly line production.  Ask your child about what they learned!

In Science, we've completed a unit on SOUND and now we are studying SPIDERS.  We'd love to do an experiment with a garden spider, so if you find one, send it in!

In reading, we are busy working with our guided reading groups and literacy centers.  We do whole group lessons also when we read out of our basal reader.

In Writing Workshop, we are using the ideas of a real author to talk about focus and starting our stories with zip and pizazz!

Grandparent/VIP Day was so much fun.  The kids did an awesome job on their program, didn't they?  I have LOTS of great pictures that I hope to upload soon...make sure you tell grandma and grandpa to check to see their picture on our website!
We had our 2nd Tasty Tuesday today.  We made Cheesy Spider Webs...what a yummy snack!  Maybe your child will want to make these at home sometime....

I look forward to meeting with you next week for conferences.  Maybe Fall Break will give me some extra time to get those pictures posted!!

What a week!  With the excitement of Homecoming dress-up days and our first class store, it was a fun week!  Thank you for all the donations from our wish bowl for our store!  The students had a great time cashing in their hard earned behavior bucks.

Do you recognize these crazy kids???

In reading, we read a silly story this week called Mrs. Brown Went to Town.  I am busy benchmarking your child's reading level while they are engaged in learning centers.  The computer center is a hit, but we are also learning about rhyming words and fluency with poetry and the pocket chart, reading independently and with a buddy, working with words with the "Scoop and Spell" game and the spelling center, and Listening to a story and reflecting on it.  Our days are busy and soon I will start guided reading groups.

We had our 1st Top Frog this week.  Check out Lucas' picture and favorites on the Top Frog page!

Next week will bring our 1st Tasty Tuesday---Apple Smiles!  I'm sure you will hear about this fun activity!  Stay tuned for fun pictures of this tasty treat!

    No pictures this week...sorry!

Thank you so much for coming Open House.  The kids really enjoyed showing off what they have been doing in 2nd grade!  If you haven't signed up for a conference, I'll be in contact with you.

Next week is Homecoming week.  We found out about the special dress up days just minutes before dismissal on Friday.  You might have seen a small slip of paper come home to say that Monday is comfy day (jammies, slippers, sweat pants, etc!).  I will be sending the list on Monday....but to give you a heads up, here are the special dress codes for each day...

    Monday-comfy day
Tuesday-decade day (dig through your parents or grandparents OLD things to look like you are from another decade!)
    Wednesday-hat day
    Thursday-crazy day
Friday- red and white jersey day

    Go JETS!!!

A snapshot of the kids of 2C...

We spent time this week learning new centers (poetry, pocket chart, art, listening, spelling) to get us ready for when  guided reading groups start.

Here's a picture of Audrey's cool torn apple artwork...

We also started a new health unit on nutrition.  We are learning along with "Little D."  Here's a picture of some kids feeling the muscles in their cheeks when they smile and frown.  Little D helped us learn that eating protein helps build strong muscles!  (Little D has a website that we've visited together as a class on the SMARTboard, but you can access it from home at: Little D).

We are becoming better and better listeners!  I told the kids that by Friday, we had made GREAT improvements!  I know we'll have a GREAT year!

PS  Book orders are due on Monday.  I added a link to Scholastic and the username/password to the Book Order page on the website.

Well, we survived the first week of 2nd grade!  Monday morning was a little quiet in our room!  I think everyone was tired!  We are busy learning the rules and routines of 2nd grade.  We have a nice group of boys and girls to share the year with!

You will want to check out our blog each week to learn more about what's happening in 2C.  We like to post pictures, give updates, and many times, it's written from the perspective of the students!

Last week we did a lot of "get to know you" activities, as well as a lot of review.  In writing workshop, we made writer's notebooks to help us get started.  We talked about how writers use their memories to write.  We searched magazines to find pictures of things that might spark our memories....like Madison, pictured below.  She found some baby lotion which reminded her of when she helps babysit for her baby cousin Kale and helps give him a bath.
Here's a picture of Audrey, Annika, and Cayden S (we have a Caden and a Cayden this year!) working hard on their notebooks.

In math, we are reviewing attributes and patterning with pattern blocks.  Below, Devin shows off his creation.

I hope your child is settling into a back to school routine!  We are sure to have busy days here at school, which should make bed time easier!  If you ever have a question or comment, please call or email me!  I'm looking forward to a great year!
