Alright folks... we are now on to our second installment of density and this time we are going to discuss diamonds. Follow these steps carefully... many of you had problems with the last posting.

  1. First check out this website from Cornell University on diamonds http://www.ccmr.cornell.edu/education/ask/index.html?quid=724
  2. Now that you have read the article, answer the following question to the best of your ability: "What do you think is another way someone could tell the difference between a real diamond and a fake? Please explain your answer in detail!"
  3. Post your response for Thursday 10/15/2009
  4. Finally check out the responses from the previous blog and, if you would like, post a response to one of your classmates ideas.
That is it!

Another way to test if a diamond is real or not is to take 2 diamonds, and go up the Moh's scale 1 by 1 by scratching the diamonds to see if they will get marked. If you reach the number 10, it means that the diamond is real. If you get a score below a 10, the "diamond" is fake. While the fake diamonds are still pretty (:P) They are still very, very expensive. Got to Go now... oh, just one thing, . :D

    Hi,
Another way someone can tell the differences from a fake and a real diamond by the density of the diamond. For example if the fake diamond particules are close to gether and the real diamond particules are not close together than you know the difference. Also if you could find the density of a real and fake diamond, then you could measure each diamond and know wchich one is fake and real.

    Bye for now,

whaz up my peeps answering the blog. i am not sure if this is even right or not but i think that you can tell if you throw a real diamond on the gruond it shouldn't break.i only think this because um..... oh yeah i watched the movie Flushed Away and rody said that if you shmashe a real ruby against the ground it would not break and i'm guessing that that goes for all minerals. people i want your oppinion on if it will work or not if you know the answer please type back!!!!!!! thanks my best homies!!!!! choi. i don't know if that was spelled right any way....BYE!!!!

i dont think there is another way to see if its a fake or not. the only accurate way to find it is by the mohs scale. i am sure one day a person will find a new way to see if its fake or not,but for right now we rely on the mohs scale to help us and hope for the best.

another way someone could tell if a real diamond is fake is you could one find a real diamond at a store and bring the fake one with you and compare them and ask the person, and two you could also take a real and fake diamond and look at them in a microscope so you can really actually see the diffrence.

You could scratch a the back of a tile with the "dimond". A real dimond will have the least damage. We did something kind of like that in a lab last year.

    Hello all of you scientists,
After I have read the reading, I know another way that you could tell the difference between a fake diamond, and a real diamond. In the reading, it says that you can tell a real diamond by it's hardness. If you could zoom in on a hard object, the particals would be tightly compacted. So to find out if a diamond is real or fake, you could find out what the particals look like in the diamond. If the particals in the diamond are tighty packed together, then you would know that it's a real diamond. If the particals are loosly packed, then you would know that it's fake.
    Happy Blogging,

Hi everybody.I think another way to tell a real dimond from a fake one would be to look at the way they grew ya" know like how they grow in caves and maybe there would be a difforense.

someone can tell if the diamond is real or fake by comparing the mass of the diamond.a reak diamond would weigh more than a fake diamond.the lighter of the two "diamonds" would be the fake one.

One way that you can tell that a diamond is fake is by the hardness. diamonds are the hardest things in the world and if you scrach it with another object and can see the scrach than it is fake

Real diamonds are very hard. On a Moch Hardness scale I am pretty sure the diamond is a ten. A fake diamond(which I am pretty sure is cubic zirconia) would not be as hard as the real diamond. Diamonds will NOT leave a streak on a plate or a piece of tile, because the diamond is just as hard as the plate or the object it is being streaked against, so the streak would not come up, If I where to try and streak a cubic zirconia diamond, this would leave a streak because I am pretty sure that the cubic zirconia, is not as hard as a real diamond. So if you streaked the real diamond, it would not streak, because it is that hard. But if you streaked a fake diamond (usually cubic zirconia)the streak would come up... Also a lot of the times if you go to a store and they sell diamonds there, the box will say "cubic zirconia" if they are fake diamonds

A.)I think that another way that a person could tell the difference between a real diamond and a fake diamond fake is by... finding out wether or not the diamond could be scratched if it can that means that it is fake if it cant be scratched but can scratch other things its a real diamond.Or you can feel it and maybe try to scratch it with your finger nail and take a magnifing glass and see if it got scrathed.

another way a scientist can tell if it is fake or real is by its clearness. Real dimonds are not as clear as fake ones because fake ones are pure glass and are made up of diffrent materials that make it look clar and shiney real dimonds are kidave cloudy on the inside of it.

Fake diamonds are very different from real diamonds. Diamonds are composed of carbon. Cubic zicronia is made of zirconium oxide with yttrium oxide. Moissanite is made from silicon and carbon. There are different ways to analyze materials to determine what they are.You can quickly determine if a material is cubic zirconia, or moissanite, or real diamond.
Fake diamonds are made out of glass or of materials called cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Another way someone could tell the difference between a real dimond and fake dimond is that a real dimond is hard and it can scratch any other thing like natural gems such as rubys and sapphire.

    more dencity
question- How do I know if a dimond is real or fake.
answer- fake dimonds are made out of glass or cubic zirconia or moissanite. real dimonds you can only smash with another dimond. you can smash a fake dimond with a hammer. there are other faechers including smallinclosions of other minerals.

Another way that you can determine if a diamond is fake or real is to take a real diamond and compare them to each other. if the materials match up to each other than you have a real diamond. but if it does not match it is unfortunately a fake.

Someone could tell the difference between fake diamonds and real diamonds by scratching them because fake diamonds are made out of glass called cubic zirconia or moissanite. Real diamonds are a lot harder than fake diamonds. Real diamonds will scratch anything else. Fake diamonds can easily be scratched.

If you were rich enough to buy a real diamond and a fake one, one way to find out which one is wich is you take something that can break a rock like a baseball bat and hit each one. If the real diamond is realy real it would not brake and for the other one it would probably brake or crack Jake McGrath

another way of finding out if its real or not may be seeing how strong they are by hitting them with a hammer. if it was made out of glass iim sure it would brake if you hit it with a hammer but if you had a real diamond and hit it with a hammer it may not brake because they are the strongest stone

    Density Take 2:

I think that another way someone can tell if a diamond is real or fake, is by the features each one has. I think that that a real diamond would be shinier than a fake diamond. Also, a fake diamond could fog up, and maybe you won't see through one; real diamonds you can see through. Fake diamonds would also not be as hard as real diamonds. Real diamonds would be really hard to scratch, abut fake diamonds would get scratched very easily. Also real diamonds would be hard to make a indent in or bump, but a fake diamond would be very easy to make in indent or bump. Also, real diamonds probably don't get holes in them, but fake diamonds probably will. There are alot of ways to tell real diamonds and fake diamonds apartt with their own features.

One way you could try to check if the ''diamond''is real or not is if you try to scratch glass with the ''diamond'',or you could try to break the ''diamond''.Another way you could test if the ''diamond''is real, is to try to sratch it with a ruby.If it scratches, it is a fake.

A way to figure out if a diamond is a real diamond or a fake, you take the so called diamond and scratch it against a non-valuable piece of quarts or a gem. If the diamond scratches the gem/quarts you can tell if it is real. If it doesn't scratch the gem/quarts you will know that it is not a real diamond.

A nother reason you can tell a diomond is fake is that a real diomond has a hardness of 10 on the Moh's scale which is a relitive scale of hardness in minerals. A real diomend would scrach any other gem such as emerald and rubys.

Another way you could tell the difference between a real diamond or a fake one is you could do what Archimedes did. You could drop both a real diamond and another diamond into there own containers of water and see if the real diamond nocks out the same amount of water as the other diamond. If it does than the other diamond is real but if the other diamond nocks out less water than it is a fake because a real diamond is probably really dense because it is so strong and a fake one isn't as dense. Or you could just do it the easier way and find the volume and the mass and divide the mass by the volume and find out the density.

    hello!!
One way to tell if a diamond is fake or real is by its hardness. Real diamonds are the hardest out of all of the minerals. On a scale of 1 to 10 diamond is the hardest mineral , it is a 10. Fake diamonds are often made out of glass. That is what I know on how you can tell a fake diamond from a real diamond.

They way you can tell the difference between a real diamond and a fake diamond is that a real diamond would scratch any thing and a fake one won't. Also you can tell because on a Moh's scale a real diamond would have a 10 and a fake one would have a 8.5 or 9.25 and a Moh's scale tells how hard a mineral is a real diamond is the hardest material so if your diamond measures a 10 it is real and if it doesn't it is fake.

Another way that I could test to see if a diamond is real or fake is take a block that you know is just barely not heavy enough to break a real diamond. Then take the diamonds that you want to test and drop the block on them on at a time. If one of the diamonds (or what you think is a diamond) breaks, then it is not a real diamond. If you test one and it does not break, it is a real diamond. This will work because a real diamond is the hardest naturally occurring substance, it gets a ten on the Moe's scale, and the next best diamond that is fake get a 9.5 on the Moe's scale.

that's all I have to say!

    Well hello fellow classmates,
One way you can tell if a diamond ia real is with the Mohs hardness scale. You could test this with a steel file or a nail. A "real" diamond for say would not scratch or chip like it's cousin the saphire. Another way to tell is to have it shipped off to a lab were they can test compackedness of the diamond. A fake diamond's substance would not match the real diamond's,so this tells it is fake.
hope we all learn something new!!!!

A few ways to differ a fake diamond from a real one is to check/study their composition. A real diamond is composed purely, nakedly by pure carbon, while a fake diamond mainly contains zirconium oxide and a teaspoon of yttrium oxide, sometimes. Also, to tell if its a real diamond there are very scarce or none at all evidence of inclusions, or flaws. On the other hand, possibly, they are fairly primitive and easy to see, with the help of a jeweler's loupe. Something else that differs fake diamonds from real ones is their hardness. A real diamond can easily scratch a fake diamond, or other multicolored gem, and has an impeccable hardness of 10, being the best on Moh's hardness scale. Glimpsing at fake diamonds with a 8.5- 9.25 hardness, they follow closely behind. A fake diamond can also be damaged by a steel file, too. Pure diamonds are made from Mother Nature, one of her strongest minerals, in fact, while cubic circonium and moissanite is probably man-made. You may also use intricately advanced, modern technology to comprehend a diamond, such as an electron micrscope or an x-ray difractormeter to determine the substances, compactness, minerals, inclusions, and hardness of a diamond. Much can be unearthed, scraped away and polished off in one reading about the density of fake diamonds and real ones.
