When Rudine and her mom walk into the Wallace store Rudine wants to try on the light blue flowerd hat. Mr. John Wallace laughs and says that if you want to try it on you have to buy it, but you probably can't afford it. But then when Miz Hattie and Grace-Anne come in Mr. John Wallace lets Miz Hattie try on that same hat without buying it or paying for it. I think thisn is because Rudine is a black lady (girl) and Miz Hattie is a white lady. I think that is really mean.

This book is really different because this time Jeremy is telling the story.

I felt really bad when mr.john wallace didn't let rudine try on the hat and let miz hattie try on the hat even though she didn't have any money.

When the Loagn kids were helping Big Ma to her seat on the bus, there was an open space at the FRONRT of the bus. Cassie yelled to Big Ma, "Over here, there is a space here!" Then everyone looked at Cassie because black people are not allowed to seat at the front of the bus. The black people are only allowed to sit in the back. I think Cassie must have been embarassed in front of all those people.

    P 11

I WONDER IF JEREMY SIMMS IS THE MAIN CHARICTER IN THE STORY BECAUSE WHEN MIZ.HATTIE AND GRACE ANNE WERE TALKING TO JEREMY. ALSO, I WONDER IF MIZ HATTIE WILL BY THE NEW 'SPRING TIME' HAT?

Who is narrating this story?? I think it actually might be a white man because he said he said his brothers were R.W. and Melvin, but I'm not sure. I'm only at page 8.

ko, to answer your question, Jeremy is narrating the story, it says so on the back.

ko I'm pretty sure it's Jeremy Simms narorating. I'm not comenting on any one eslse ( I will later) because I havent finish reading and I don't want it to be given away. So far the story is my favorite!

ok I was on p 50 when I last commented. NV and DC I felt soo bad when Mr.Wallace OFERED Miz Hatti to try it on but wouldn't let Rudine try it on and even if she bought it she couldn't return it.

I feel bad for the Logans becase Big Ma said to go away even though they didn't want too.

SJ, Jeremy is ONE of the main characters. Allthough, just because Jeremy is the narrater that does not ALWAYS mean that he is the main character. I agree with you SJ, but I already read the whole book so I can not tell you any more of this story

DC, I agree. I think it is unfair that Miz Hattie gets to try on the hat and Rudine does not just because she is black.

SJ- I read the back of the book and it said "Jeremy Simms watches from the porch of the general store" etc. So, yes, Jeremy Simms IS the narrator of this story.
I think that it is incredibly mean how Mr Wallace didn't let Rudine try on the hat, but, RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER, lets Miz Hattie wear it. That is really mean.

DC, I also think that Cassie must have been embarrassed when they were on the bus and Cassie yelled to Big Ma and then everyone looked at her because she probably does not understand that blacks are not aloud to sit at the front of the bus, only whites are aloud to sit at the front of the bus.

at first I thought that Cassie was narrating until Miz Hattie and Grace Ann came and said to the narrator "Ey, Jeremy" and then I realized that Jeremy was the narrator.

nhu and dc, I totally was about to write that and I have that written in my Reader Response part starting at "Wait up..." all the way to "Them's white folks' seats!" Cassie must be beat red in embarrassment

SJ, I agree with you. I also felt bad when Big Ma made the Logan kids shoo away from the bus.

I wasl really happy when Big Ma got off the bus because she would have gone off the edge of the bridge and died

In Song of the Trees aand The Friendship I think Cassie was around 9 or 10. So is this before the others eventhough in the "other books to read by MDT" Song of the Trees is there.

This book is great I just read the ending and I think it was kind of lucky that Big Ma was not on the bus.

I wonder if any of the people on the bus lived???????

I think that was very nice and trustwortrhy of Stacey to listen and believe Jeremy.

This is the same as many pepoles and I too think that it is unfair that Miz Hattie gets to try on the hat.

SJ I feel bad for them also but I think it is good they left because if they saw Big Ma getting of the bus and started a fight they could have gotten hung

    page 20-paragraph 6-"Pa sneered...etc"
I like how Mildred D. Taylor used how the really talk, the dialect, not just when they are talking, but in Jeremy's thoughts, too.
page 21-"That ain't never set right to me....etc"
I like how in the Mississippi Bridge it is from Jeremy's point of view, a white person's point of view.
    page 20
I think the reason why Mr. Charlie does not like negroes is because when he was little, like in The Well, he was treated badly by Hammer and David and Hammer and David lied to him so he probably now thinks all negroes and bad so he treats all blacks bad.

I can't believe the bus broke through and jeremy was being nice to everyone and helping jodies pull the people out of the rosalie. and i felt really bad for jeremy when he saw grace ann and her mom dead.

I'm very glad that Ma Rachel didn't get killed because she is nice and is a part of the Logan's family. Everyone in the Logans' family loves her. I wonder what the story would have been without her? I think that would be very sad.

on page 51 after his daddy yelled at him he thought "I liked Stacey... and liked Josias too." It show that he likes black folk too and think of black folk as just folk. I mean that he thinks all the black and white people are all just people. It's good.

nv, i agree, The Friendship was better. So was song of the trees. and the well, so far. I don't know, I just didn't like it until the end so if I was a regular reader, I would put it down because it isn't that interesting for the first 2/3 of the book.

NHA, I agree with you on how Jeremy thinks of black and white people as all just people, not colored and not colored!
