What surprised me as I read was that other people would actually visit the Secret Annexe, even for dinner! Also, some people are so desperate to take of their shoes! I think I could visit the Scret Annexe, but not to miss dinner with my family if I had one. I also hope the person, Kraler, didn't have too smelly socks at that time.
Something that suprised me in this passage was that Mr. Koophuis would say good bye to them when he is leaving to the hospital like he is going out shopping.
On page 110, Anne says it is Mrs. Van Daan birthday and she got a pot of jam, coupons for cheese, meat, and bread. If this was all the others could give her as a jewish family, I wonder what the "pure" german's got for their birthdays?
I was surprised how rude dussel can behave. Earlier in the book, when dussel first came to the annexe, I thought he was going to be a very quiet person, and not be too loud or hard working. (Anne even described dussel as shy earlier too!)But when dussel complained and was upset that he couldn't use his room at certain points of the week, (which really wasn't that much) I got kinda angry too.
Why does Anne talk about the outside world so much, do you think she will try to escape? I thought they got there radio taken away, how is Anne getting all the information on the war?
Delouse means to rid an animal or a person of lice by a chemical or physical means. I was surprised at how the routine of doing the same things over and over each day was making everybody grouchy. Anne said "Relations between us are getting worse all the time." I feel bad for Anne because it sounds now like she is getting very depressed. She doesn't have an appetite and she wants to sleep to pass the time. She doesn't sound as happy now as she did in the beginning of the book.
Something I read that surprised me was that the Van Daans were out of money and the everyone could afford a pot of Jam, bread, meat and cheese for Mrs. Van Daans birthday. Something else that surprised me was that Dussel sold his wifes fur got for 325 florins, and Mrs. Van Daan wanted to use all that money for her clothes after she got a pot of jam, cheese, meat and bread!
Why is everyone getting sick in the Secret Annexe, is it becausethe hiding place is an unhealthy enviorment?
I thought that it was surprising that eight people in the annex could be so quiet for such a long time(8:30am - 5:50pm). Also, I thought that it was pretty surprising that the people in the annex couldn't go to the bathroom for such a long time and that they had to wear slippers and could not wear shoes or else it would make too much noise.
What surprised me as I read was that the other workers/people hiding the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel (Miep, Elli, etc.) would come and eat dinner with the Annex members, I thought only the Annex members ate together. Also, I was surprised at how many times Anne goes into the bathroom.
I was surprised that Anne was not really mad about her pen. If I were her, I would have been furious to lose my most prized posession. Also, I was surprised that Anne and Margot actually do school work in the Annexe. It would be hard for me to do school work at home, because it would be harder to understand. Mrs.Ault does a great job explaining!
page 105 Wednesday, 18 August, 1943 Why does Mrs. Van Daan talk incessantly, moving from one person to the next?
Zach Q: Why is everyone getting sick in the Secret Annexe? A: The hiding place is an unhealthy environment for several reasons. First, there were probably few, if any, antibacterial products available in 1943, and limited coupons for things like antibacterial products. Second, when Miep brings food to the Annexe, she could also transport germs that can't get out; consequently, the different people in the Annexe can catch sicknesses. Lastly, their diets may have been limited, as a result of their limited coupons, which could also compromise their health.
It supriesed how strained the relationships between the Annex members were in the Annex were. In one paragraph on page 109, I read that no one dared to open their mouths during meal time, unless they were eating, because their words would always be misunderstood, and no one really had anything nice to say. Plus, pretty much most of the words that the Annex members speak either criticize someone else, or complain about issues in the Annex. An example would be on pg. 104 with the potato peeling. Mr. Dussel keeps trying to show Anne about how to peel a potato correctly, which he thought was his way, but Anne timidly explained to him that she got on better her way, because it was easier and mroe comfrotable to peel that way.
Q: Since they have to be really quiet in the 'Annexe', do most of their fights take place at night or morning? because she talks A LOT about the familys' fights
I am surprised how alot of people are getting sick in the Annexe. Its just wierd. Also, miep, Elli, Kraler etc. are in the Annexe and eating dinner with the Van Daans and the Franks. I think when everbody is sick is because they live in an unhealthy enviorment and when food comes,There are germs coming in
I was surprised how alot of people not in the Annexe such as miep and kraler are eating dinner with the members of the annexe! Also it surprised me that Anne is in love with peter.
