All of my grandparents have gone home to Jesus, but I have such
wonderful memories of them. People did not move around as often as
they do today, so we lived in the same city as our grandparents and we
spent every Sunday with one set or the other. I have special memories
of each of them.
Grandma R. was very affectionate. She taught me how to do plain
knitting, fancy embroidery, and how to make simple doll clothes.
Grandpa R. played cards with us - mostly Rummy. He never LET us win,
so if we beat him it was quite a treat. Every time I smell cigar smoke
I think of my Grandpa.
Grandma F. liked to cook and bake. She taught me how to bake
cookies and cakes. She always wore a big apron over her dress unless
she was going out. I still use some of the same old German recipes she
used to use. Grandpa F. taught us how to fish. I remember how proud
he was of me when I caught a big northern pike. I think it was the
only fish I ever caught.
Grandpa R's birthday was around Thanksgiving so the entire family
would get together to celebrate. Grandpa F's birthday was on the
Fourth of July. That was always the occasion for a big family picnic
and fireworks.
On Memorial Day all the women and children of both sides of the
family went to the cemetery to clean the graves sitea and put flowers on
them. I used to love to hear the stories of these people I never knew,
but who were near and dear to my grandmothers' and mother's hearts. I
believe that is where I first started to love history so much.
While I have special memories of each of them, the one thing all
four of them have in common is that I knew how much they loved me and
how special I was to them.
Now I am a Gramma. Two of my grandsons live far away. That makes
me sad because I miss them very much. One lives very close. That of
course makes me very happy. I wonder what they will remember about me
when they are grown up. Will they remember all the times I read to
them and sent them books? Will they remember little trips we took
together? Will they know how often I prayed for them? Will they know
How very much I loved them?
Tell us about your grandparents. What makes them so wonderful?
If you do not have any grandparents, tell us about someone special
in your life today.
