This week we read the short story, "The Gold Cadillac" by Mildred Taylor.  She is also the author of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", one of our favorite class novels from last year. Today we are going to write a letter to Ms. Taylor expressing our opinions about the story.

Yesterday, we watched the Inauguration of President Barak Obama.  Throughout history, most presidents have taken the oath of office on an open Bible.  The Bible was often open to a scripture passage that was significant to that person.

Pretend you are being sworn in as President of the United States.  What portion of scripture would you use?  Explain why you chose this portion and how it would help you focus on being a Godly leader.

All of my grandparents have gone home to Jesus, but I have such wonderful memories of them.  People did not move around as often as they do today, so we lived in the same city as our grandparents and we spent every Sunday with one set or the other.  I have special memories of each of them.

Grandma R. was very affectionate.  She taught me how to do plain knitting, fancy embroidery, and how to make simple doll clothes.  Grandpa R. played cards with us - mostly Rummy.  He never LET us win, so if we beat him it was quite a treat.  Every time I smell cigar smoke I think of my Grandpa.

Grandma F. liked to cook and bake.  She taught me how to bake cookies and cakes.  She always wore a big apron over her dress unless she was going out.  I still use some of the same old German recipes she used to use.  Grandpa F. taught us how to fish.  I remember how proud he was of me when I caught a big northern pike.  I think it was the only fish I ever caught.

Grandpa R's birthday was around Thanksgiving so the entire family would get together to celebrate.  Grandpa F's birthday was on the Fourth of July.  That was always the occasion for a big family picnic and fireworks.

On Memorial Day all the women and children of both sides of the family went to  the cemetery to clean the graves sitea and put flowers on them.  I used to love to hear the stories of these people I never knew, but who were near and dear to my grandmothers' and mother's hearts.  I believe that is where I first started to love history so much.

While I have special memories of each of them, the one thing all four of them have in common is that I knew how much they loved me and how special I was to them.

Now I am a Gramma.  Two of my grandsons live far away.  That makes me sad because I miss them very much.  One lives very close.  That of course makes me very happy.  I wonder what they will remember about me when they are grown up.  Will they remember all the times I read to them and sent them books?  Will they remember little trips we took together?  Will they know how often I prayed for them?  Will they know How very much I loved them?

Tell us about your grandparents.  What makes them so wonderful?  If you do not have any grandparents, tell us about someone special in your life today.

What is your definition of a hero?

Besides Jesus, who from your present day life or from history best fits your definition of a hero?  Why?  How does this person serve as an inspiration to you? Be sure to include details and examples.

Most of you know that I love history.  I love reading Bible Events because they are the history of God’s people.  Over the years I have had many favorite Bible Events.  I am going to share one of my favorites from when I was five years old and why in some respects it remains a favorite today.

When I was five, I had a baby brother about six months old.  I loved the story of Baby Moses.  I used to pretend that I was Miriam putting Moses in my Mom’s woven laundry basket in the river (our sidewalk).  I then switched roles and was the beautiful princess who found him.  I usually used my doll, but one day I decided to put my baby brother in the basket.  My poor Mom almost had a heart attack when she realized I pulled him out of the crib, carried him downstairs and put him in the basket.

I loved that story because it was one I could relate, too.  As a big sister, I could understand how Miriam most have felt when she knew her baby brother was in danger.  Later as a Mom I could understand how very frightened Moses’ mom was.  But I could also see how very much God loved that family, and how he had a plan for Moses which could not be fulfilled if he was murdered with all the other baby boys at that time.

What is your favorite Bible Event?  Tell us a little bit a bout it.  Tell us why it is so special to you and how it relates to your life.

Over the years it has been very interesting to look at the books the sixth graders have chosen to read.  Some of them are books I recall reading at that age, others are recently released books by authors I am unfamiliar with.  Sometimes they look so interesting, I read them myself.  The "Anne of Green Gables" series is one I never read until I was an adult. Janette Oke is a Christian author introduced to me by a student.  This opened a whole new genre to me.  I love reading books that show how God works in our lives.

I was a voracious reader, so it is very difficult for me to choose just one book or author that I enjoyed the most when I was in middle school; but I think it may have been the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I read my first one in fifth grade at the recommendation of the librarian.  I read the entire series five times in two years.  My little sister used to climb into bed with me at night and we would play Laura and Carrie.

I also loved Nancy Drew and Judy Bolton.  My mom started me reading the books she had as a child - the original Nancy Drew and Judy Bolton books.  Then of course there were the books by Louisa May Alcott and........  See!  I told you that I would have a difficult time stopping at one.

As a child I read a lot of historical fiction which made me interested in the facts behind the book.  Eventually, although I did not particularly like history in middle school, I grew to love it in high school and college.  It is now my favorite subject to teach. You never know when a book can lead you to a career. Today as an adult I still read a lot of Christian fiction, historical fiction, biographies, and history of the United States - especially  from the Civil War through World War II.  Of course the Bible is part of my daily reading material.

So, what is your favorite book, series, and/or author?  Tell us about it and why you enjoy it so much.  If you are an adult, tell us about your favorites when you were in middle school and what you enjoy now.

I am planning to post a new question or statement each week.  I thought a good question to begin with was to ask you to tell us about yourself.

Reminder.  If you are a student, please do not add your last name.
