I choose the stations that students are visiting daily. These activities are structured so that students are able to complete them in 22 minutes.
I arrange my 90 minute blok like this: 15 Minutes for calendar 5 minute warm up 20 minute lesson 15 minute independent work 25 minute centers/small group 25 minute writing The stations that they visit are selected for them and they rotate on a daily basis.
My reading block usually consists of: 15 minutes for calendar, 10 minutes for Class Meeting & Movement, 20 minutes whole-group lesson, 5 minutes explanation of stations, 30 minutes station time, 10 minutes of wrap-time time or closure (discuss what we learn). Within my stations, I use word study, writing, etc.I only do one station everyday to give the students plenty of time to complete their work & to allow for more instructional time in my small reading groups. My assistant is monitoring the room or working with a group that needs help.
We start with 15-20 minutes of independent reading. I conference with 3-4 students to see if their book is in their level. I also give ideas that I want them to work on while reading. After that, we do a warm-up activity which includes phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Next, we have a whole group lesson whicch lasts from 20 - 40 minutes depending on the skills being taught. After that, we get into small groups. Groups are arranged by student needs and are teacher guided or independent. I see 4-5 children at a time and can rotate in another group after skills are aquired.
During the 90 minute block a variety of instruction is used. 30 minutes of whole group instruction working with high frequency words and phonics activities followed by 30 minutes of small group instuctions where the children are grouped based upon current assesments so that these lessons can be differentiated based on each groups neeeds. The last 30 minutes is divided into a specific phonics lesson or making words and some sort of writing activity.
During our 90 literacy block, students spend 10 - 15 minutes participating in whole group instruction. Next, they rotate through 3 stations that last approximately 15 - 18 minutes each. After these three stations, we spend the last 20 minutes completing writing instruction. When they are working in stations, they are ususally in small groups of 4 or 5 students. The activities are chosen for them at this point in the year, but it is a goal that by mid-year they are responsible for choosing the stations that they complete from a weekly "menu".
My 90 min block looks like this: Morning Message (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure); discussion, whole group story (I read); small group literacy station, then lastly, journal writing. Their station are both teacher-selected and student selected; after they have complete the teacher assignment, they are able to chose their next activity.
Students go to three thirty minute stations for four days...Mondays we introduce skills and do whole-group lessons... Tues-Fri I meet with all students in guided reading groups...30 min groups of 6-8 students while others are in either independent work groups or one of the four literacy stations working in groups of 2-3. All students have individual schedules in their folders to help them know their daily schedules.
