On page 62, Debbie mentions the "link" between a student's ability to comprehend and their performance on standardized testing (such as EOG's).  Helping students to be successful on standardized tests is a school-wide responsibility...

*Older grade teachers--What could younger grade teachers do to better prepare our students for EOG's?
*Younger grade teachers--What do you already do to prepare students for EOG's and other standardized tests?
* Do you have any other thoughts or ideas about how our school could better prepare students for standardized tests?

We talk about reading the directions, going back and checking our work if we finish early and taking our time, letting our 'computers' absorb the questions.

I think students need more practice in taking a selection apart just like they learn to decode by separating words into chunks. Also, short selections at their level or easier will help them learn skills such as summarizing, etc. and then they can feel more comfortable moving on to more difficult selections. I also think the "test
vocabulary should be taught at every grade level in creative ways, not just to learn the word and definition. I believe it will stick better that way than to drill it in.

I think their are specific test taking strategies that will help students and that they should know that tests are another genre and they have specific characteristics just like poetry, etc. does. I have an excellent book on test taking strategies if anyone would like it.

For the teachers of the younger students, maybe incorporate the EOG vocabulary on word walls, in writing and whenever and where ever possible.

As much use as possible of similar EOG terms/vocabulary...as appropriate for the age group. The more familiar students become with the correct terminology, the better they understand key words and questions.
