What activities have you tried (or would like to try) in your independent workstations/centers that provide students the opportunity to practice fluency?  (Please share specifics including where others could find similar resources.)

I have made character puppets and the kids role play and act out the story. This increases their fluency when we go back and re-read the text.

To practice fluency I use a lot of poetry. I have a book from scholastic called The Super Book of Phonics Poems. We echo, choral, and partner read with the poems and sometimes tape record to rate our fluency. Each student keeps a poetry notebook so the students can reread the poems for extra practice.

I really like "readers theatre" for fluency practice. I also like the idea of modeling fluency on tapes for students to repeat and practice. Even parents who struggle with helping their child could listen to one to see how it is done and then do their own.

I use poetry in my classroom. We choral read and partner read many of the poems. Then the children write the poem & illustrate. We are in the process of making a poetry book that they will take home at the end of the year.

Read aloud math poetry in groups, pairs or in a tape recorder.

I really like to allow the kids to "read" into a recorder. I use their baggy books or simple library books that they're really excited about! It's motivating to hear their own voice!

One way I use fluency is each week I have a 2 character reader's theater which is tiered by reading le el. Students practice with their partners, then read into a recorder and listen to their readings. Later they fill in a story web or summarize the play.

Reader's Theatre is a great way to scaffold while building reading fluency. Not to mention, students are very motivated by reader's theatre.

A wonderful way to practice fluency is by allowing students to listen to and read along with books on tape or leap pads/

Poetry and plays/drama provide good opportunities for fluency practice, as well as partner fluency practice/choral reading.
