  I have noticed that my better spellers are those who know thier letter sounds and can recognize the sounds they hear in a word. I also have noticed that the more sounds they learn the better spellers they all are becoming.

  I have noticed that one of the most effective way to teach phonics in through student writing. When the students are using the letters and sounds they hear to write something meaningful the connection and importance becomes obvious.
  
  I have also started using more making words lessons in my classroom this year. Already I see a difference in the types of words that my students can spell. Making words directs student attention to letter sounds, letter placement, and word patterns. I love it! Thanks D.O.

  It still amazes me that students can spell a word correctly on a spelling test but turn around and misspell that same word in their writing. I had my students write their oen dictionary that was used in our writing workshops.

  I have to agree completely with L.A. CA and myself are always putting spelling words on newsletters that we see consistantly being spelled wrong. The students will get wonderful grades on their tests, and then turn around a week later and spell the same word wrong in their writng.

  I agree with so much that was written about spelling. With all the hard work put into having them spell a certain word right, they get it wrong because of carelessness. Then again, some people in general are just not good spellers

  My students often spell words as they hear them. By the middle of second grade, however, they have learned more word families, prefixes and suffixes which assist them in spelling most words. They also have learned many sight words by now.

  As discussed in our group, I do feel that there is a need for a focused spelling program perhaps schoolwide that would utilize various, more creative types of spelling practices. Students in upper grades do not seem to demonstrate strong abilities overall to spell a lot of basic vocabulary words and struggle with knowing word families, etc.
