What activities have you tried (or would like to try) in your independent workstations/centers that provide students the opportunity to practice new vocabulary?  (Please share specifics including where others could find similar resources.)

I integrate my new vocabulary into my writing station. I have a themed word wall set up. When I first introduce the word wall, I have the students verbally use each word in a sentence. Then throughout the week the students use the word wall when writing. They also have the opportunity to add new words to our wall.

I use "write the room" to work on vocabulary in my room. We introduce our thematic words at the beginning of a unit and then label them on charts. My students use literacy center time to write those words.

I add objects or pictures in each work station that reflect a vocabulary word or concept. The students then naturally discuss and use new vocabulary regularly. When children speak to one another and discuss new words and ideas they retain and transfer information much easier than when the same vocabulary word(s) is introduced solely in a formal setting.

I struggle with a good assessment to use with young children to measure vocabulary. Obviously listening to children speak provides us with a lot of information but isn't a good way to pin-point ways to increase language useage.

I use picture cards the children pick a card and use it correctly in a sentence. When doing realouds I stop and do think alouds and oral discussion about certain vocabulary words.

Some activities that I've used are sentence strip writing, finding word parts, drawing pictures of vocabulary with labels, writing stories, reading around an unfamiliar word, and I've started a tally mark spot for the use of new vocabulary.
