I assess my kindergarten students through Dibels and teacher observations. It's fun to hear my students use the 2 new words each day in their personal conversations. My students really aren't choosing to write those new words independently in their journals yet, but we'll get there. They are still learning to write.
I feel like I have a lot of room for growth when it comes to assessing vocabulary. I do informally assess vocabulary use as students read to me or during a read aloud. Sometimes I have the students try to use the new word in a sentence.
Using new words in writing small passages/sentences, retelling and using new vocabulary, playing vocabulary concentration matching games with definitions, through students speaking vocabulary/discussions.
