This year we have a variety of schedules: one for art, p.e. or music; another for science lab; another for computer lab; another for Wednesdays(and every other Wed.) and another for the last 6 weeks of school each quarter. The changes are minimal, but enough to throw some off their game when they thrive on routine!
Last week went well. We have now been to all specials, including computer and science lab. Students enjoyed them all, with the most comments written about art! Cursive is going well, too. Students got to try their best letter on the SMARTbd. using special ink. We watched a vid clip on bones and muscles. Students are excited about Homeworkopoly, which is played each Monday.
We have only had three days of perfect attendance because of a stomach virus that seems to have hit our class. We try to wash hands as often as possible and keep sneezes covered. This week should be better......each week we're adding more and more to our schedule as we "get our groove....."

Today was the best day yet! Our class is coming together as a team and we are accomplishing more each day (next week will definitely increase in content and homework). Today the students learned about "Ticket Out the Door". It is how we end our day. Students take one post-it note and write a comment or question about what they did that day. It is stuck to a poster as they go to their cubby to get their backpack for dismissal. It is annonymous and spelling doesn't count (although I hope it will improve during the year!!!! Below are some of the comments as written by the students. If I have time, I'll write them in the Blog each week, otherwise it will be whenever I have the time. Most importantly, it provides me feedback from their perspective, on what they understand, don't understand and feelings about the class.
"I love gitting libarry. I love school"
    "I lik resses and libare"
"I like the math we did. I don't like the morning work"
"I liked recess today. I think recess should be longer"
"I wish we did clickers longer"
"I like when we did the clickers and toothpast and cursive"
    "I liked the toothpaste game"
"I loved doing the toothpast activetey it was a good lesen"
"I liked when all of us wrote cursive"
    "I liked the clickers"
    "I liked the subtrachin"
    "I liked using clickers"
"I like reding at the libey becaus is fun to read"
"I liked playing the subtratian game today"
    "Loved the media center"
"Today I licked lrneing about cursive"
"I liked everything that we did"
"I liked media. I liked crsiv, I liked my new friends"
    "Going to media & resses"

And that's what was memorable about the 3rd day in 3rd grade.

Today went well. We spent the majority of it establishing procedures and routines. The morning passed quickly as we worked with the SMARTboard. We had PE with our new PE teacher. Recess was followed with cursive practice. We will continue to learn two new letters each day. The AGENDA is new for third graders so we spent time copying it and discussing how it will help organization. Of course the goal each week is to play Homeworkopoly each Monday. WFE R.O.C.K.S. was explained and a goal of memorizing what it stands for was set. Dismissal was a little new so it took more time than usual, but went very smoothly. It was a good day!

Meet the Teacher went well last week, even though it was quite hot in the classroom. We only had 10 students show up...several were out of town on vacation. I enjoyed meeting those students and parents who came to the classroom. We have a great group of students I can tell. I'm busy putting some finishing touches on the classroom, but more importantly, working on First day Activities. There's so much to do!!!!
Enjoy your last day of summer vacation and I will see you on Tuesday. Make sure you know how to get home, bus, carpool, van or walker.......we don't want anyone spending the night on the very first day of school!!!!!!!

What a GREAT group I have coming to third grade!  Thursday will be exciting just because it's so much fun to meet each other. Third grade is the MOST fantastic grade, IMO, because students are becoming more independent learners and exploring content deeper. Yes, there's multiplication....who will be the first to learn ALL the facts?.....and there's my favorite, cursive writing!!!....Science is a great journey of bones, stars plants and good 'ol dirt. Actually, reading is my very favorite because it can be thrilling and fun and mysterious and informative ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
This year our school has a theme, "Passport for the Future", which will encompass a thorough journey of learning. Your passport is knowledge and it takes hard work to build it. This year I'm incorporating a classroom theme, "Cooking Up A GREAT Year" because 1) I like to cook , 2) there's a huge amount a learning that can take place while participating, and 3) our classroom is the only classroom in the school connected to a kitchen (Don't you feel special already?).I'll try to incorporate some cooking activities as often as we can based on behavior, content and appropriateness. Hopefully we'll get some mom and dads to help equip the kitchen and help out in general.
Third grade is like everything else in life, it's as much fun and purposeful as you make it. I know we're going to have a super year. How are you feeling right now? What are you looking forward to in third grade? What questions do you have? What have you heard about it from your friends? Use the comment button to add your thoughts. I'll check it every day.
    See you soon.

I hope everyone had a great summer. I did. I can't believe the summer is vitually over, at least for me! My mind is spinning with ideas, changes I need to make, classroom arrangement, new math program, and so much more. My first task is to update my webpage. I'm hoping former students and parents will read this Blog and offer suggestions. If you really liked a certain aspect of the webpage, let me know so I don't change it. If you really didn't use a link, let me know that, too.
I'm leaving today for a conference in Northern Virginia (6 hours away) for teachers who use SMARTboards. Over 1,000 people applied to attend, but only about 400 were selected. I can't wait to learn more ways to incorporate the SB with daily lessons.
Let me hear how your summer has been by replying to this Blog. It will be great to hear what you have been doing. Also, include the most interesting book title that you read so others might read it.
Meet the Teacher is coming up Thursday, August 20th from 4pm to 6pm. Stop by the room and tell me which fourth grade teacher you got. They are all very good!
    See you soon.

We had a super last few days of school. Breakfast with parents, the now infamous “Dr. E’s Awesome Third Graders” DVD, students awards, cleaning up the classroom and popsicles made the last day special. I want to thank students and parents once again for my wonderful gifts and positive comments. I am fortunate to be able to work in a career I love.

As I finalized classroom cleaning on Thursday in the quietness of the morning, I realized how much I already missed my students! The room now sits with all furniture on one side, blank walls, and stuffed cubbies with books just waiting for new third graders to arrive in August.

Congrats to the students who earned the most 100 dollar bills over the course of the year. They will be receiving free movie passes in the mail in the next week. I was really pleased with the number of 100 dollar bills packed into the jar!

My advice hasn’t changed….read, read, read, write, write, write, and keep those multiplication facts fresh in your head this summer.

Any student can write a BLOG about what they are doing over the summer, especially if they include a book review, and e-mail it to me (selrod@wcpss.net) and I’ll post it on the BLOG page. Your friends will be able to keep tabs on what you’re doing over the summer.

It’s time for me to get this posted…….thanks again to all for a fantastic year !!!

This morning Ms. Intemann took us in the room next door to practice our skit and get the props.

Then we went to lunch and when we came back we read “The Best School Year Ever”. Then we went to computer lab.

After that we made a flower out of Q-tips, tissue paper and other things. It looked really good when it was finished.

Then our orchestra students went to the auditorium at 1:00 and we went out to recess.

We had no math stars because we were watching Ilaina, Caleb, Erica and Michael perform their concert and we got front row seats!

We started a project where we watch a Ramona video and we write down some notes and on Friday we write down everything we know about the Ramona stories.

Ms. Intemann taught us how to draw the Blue Dog.

On Thursday we had Erica, Michael, Ian, and Angela go to the pancake breakfast for students who earned 40 or more AR points for the year.

We did a video on what we liked best about third grade and we are going to tell second graders.

We had a great 3rd grade picnic! We had a great week.!

We had a lot of fun this week. We did a practice EOG. Now we know what it feels like! Every day now we have to take a math  facts test for 6 minutes. Social studies always keeps us using our knowledge and we learn interesting facts. In science we learned about lady bugs life cycle and how they help plants. This week we learned geometric shapes and had an assessment. We are going to make a present for Mother’s Day (can’t tell you what it is).
