Hi all!  I thought I would start a blog to see if I can actually use it.. Let me know how your vacation is going - if you see any Social Studies things that you can share.  Mrs. E

It appears to me that all the teachers have the same idea. The only difference between your blog and Mrs. Roberts's is Mrs. Roberts is using hers to name her pet fish. Anyway, I thought you might find this interesting, but I can't very well type it. Here's the address: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Charlie_Chaplin%2C_bond_of_friendship%2C_1918.ogg
Check it out! It's really funny and educational. You can find more like it by looking up Charlie Chaplin on Wikipedia.

Actually, I think you'll like this more… it's more educational, but still funny: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Charlie_Chaplin%2C_The_Bond%2C_1918.ogg

Did you want to name some fish?

I'll check out the site tomorrow - maybe you can show me on the computer in class, so the rest can see it.

Uh… we don't have to name some fish… I'm just fine, thank you. However, I really appreciate the use of this blog. If you do want a new idea, how about voting for whether or not we should order a real knight costume for our mascot? Of course, that's a little tacky, but a real costume might come in handy in the long run and will work better than that (impressive, but) temporary costume Mike wore during the pep rally.

Hi Kevin - How's vacation going?

Kevin, I have to admit: you're really good at small talk. I mean, really REALLY small talk.
Here's a question I have: in the future when kids have to learn about the Iraq War and other stuff that's not in our history books, what do you think they'll do- lengthen the school year so they can get through everything, or cut something out of the history books? (If you say the latter, what do you think they'll cut? Probably not the Revolutionary War, we're too proud of that...)

Jen - it is a dilema - when things get shortened down to fit in the school year, valuable information is lost. What about Global History? That's what you have next year. It's a two year course, and they still don't get everything in. The thing to do is learn as much as you can, all the time. I still learn new things every day.

I totally agree with you, but sometimes it's hard to get a kid to look and learn about history on their own. I still don't know why we had the Korean, Persian Gulf, and Vietnam Wars! Heck, I hardly know why we're at war now, it's hard to not get influenced by biased people. History is a serious issue, and it looks like we're going to eventually lose it all. Let's see if we can make history text books from fifty years beforehand the required summer reading for our kids, that might help...

Having a Social Studies required reading list is a good idea - at least one or two books concerning past events -

    Mrs. Engel,
This is my favorite subject in school HISTORY!!
And this summer I was so upset because me ,my family , and Savanna Jaekles family Were supposed to go to Gettisburg ( I don`t think I spelled that right!)which I was really excited about because It has so much stuff about the civil war and slavery and my favortie things to learn in history are about Slavery and the Civil war! And I was so upset when plans started to change and we didn`t go,and my dad`s a teacher and he really wanted to go so he said we will go another time.I hope we will!

    Dear Mrs.Engel,
This Summer I went to Kansas City to see my great grandma and grandma. While there, I went to the lake, swam and rode jet skies. I celabrated my 11th b-day party there. My b-day was on July 4th. There were millions of fireworks on the lake. I had a blast there.
    from,
    Savanna Jaekle
    P.S. see you at school.
