    Putting Worn-Out Words to Rest

ELA:  We have a newly published author!

Gigi read her great book to the class and then got to go around the school to read it to others.  We are so proud of her, and she is proud of herself.

I love seeing her name added to our list of Books We've Shared.  Keep writing, Gigi!

This week we really concentrated on the 'word choice' aspect of writing by constructing a word wall that we call our "Word Graveyard."

This is a place where we put over used words to rest, and give a list of better options.

The students got to use their dictionary skills by looking up each of these worn out words in a thesaurus, and creating a list of alternatives in their Reader's Notebook.  We then created these tombstones together.  They are hanging in our classroom where they can be used as a resource while writing.

Tell your child to use a 'Nerdy Word' today!

These students got to read the book, Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears to their buddies in Miss Sullivan's Class.

I think they had a lot of fun!

Dominick and Nicole got the opportunity to lead the brainstorm for our Friday Letters this week.  They did an excellent job!  Remember to get them signed for homework!

Math: More multiplication!  We will be having our test in a week and a half (Tuesday, December 22).  That way we can finish up before winter break.

Science: We will be starting circuits next week.

Social Studies:  They students are still working on their maps of the U.S..  We should be finishing them up next week.

In other news:  We had some messy fun making our gingerbread houses with our buddy class.

Thank you, moms, for coming into help...and to all the families for sending in supplies!

    See you Monday!

    -Mrs. S.

A great week for Social Studies.

ELA:  One thing we worked on this week was our 'Book of Spells'.  This is simply a handmade book in which the kids can write words they have trouble spelling.  It will give them some practice writing the word (3 times), and also give them a place to look up words that they frequently mis-spell.  Words get chosen for the 'Book of Spells' in 2 different ways:

       1) Through site word spelling tests (words spelled incorrectly on the pre-test must be entered)
       2) When incorrect words are found in the student's writing.

I will write 'BOS 3x' and a list on any given assignment, when I would like a word to be entered and practiced.  Kids can enter word that they think they have trouble with as well, and in addition I would like to invite the parents to choose words for the book.  We will periodically have individual spelling tests on the words in your child's BOS.  I will announce when we are to have these tests so that you can study at home.

Sound alike words can also be practiced in the book of spells.  I may ask your child to write a sentence containing the correct use of the sound alike word.

    Example:
He went to the icecream parlor.
    I want icecream, too.

    Math:
We did lots more work with multiplication.  After we learn a set of factors, we have a quiz the next day.  This quiz should be signed and returned.  Please remember to study multiplication facts at home.  It is important as a building block for further topics, but it also will create confidence in your child.  They will feel better about their math abilities, and themselves if they are successful on these quizzes.

Social Studies:  We are having a lot of fun making giant maps of the United States.

The kids were broken up into groups of 3 to work on this project.

They must correctly label many US landforms and cities, as well as neatly color their work.

They use our SS text book and classroom maps as resources.

When the maps are completed, we will begin learning about different goods that are grown/made around our country.

I am very proud of the students and the quality work they are producing.  The maps are looking GREAT!!

    Super Short Week!

Last week was SUPER short, but we managed to pack a lot into those 2 days!

ELA: We have a newly published author!  Here she is reading her book to the class.  She also got to go around the school to read her work and show off.  I am sure we will have more published authors soon.

In other ELA news, Mrs. Seablom read, When Sophie Gets Angry: Really, Really Angry and then the class brainstormed times they were very angry.  Each student then wrote a memoir.

Math: In math we worked on the multiples of 2.  We skip counted by 2s while tossing a kickball around our circle, then broke up into groups to create arrays for all the products.

We had a lot of fun making turkey crafts to help the Kid's Canvas out with their vision.  Here are the students making their creations...

The Feast!:  Our Thanksgiving feast was a blast. We are so thankful for our room moms.  Mrs. R. and Mrs. S. brought in an awesome spread of food.

There were delicious traditional thanksgiving foods: turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn....and of course pumkin and apple pie for dessert.

Mrs. M. also made scrumptious and beautiful turkey cookies.

Mrs. B. helped the class make a different cute turkey cookie for our final treat.

Thank you, room moms!  You made our Thanksgiving very special and memorable.

PJ Day:  Tuesday was also the F-Go Pajama Day.  Our F-Go Rep Kate, and F-Go adviser Miss Scalzo both decided to wear Snuggies!  Here they are, trying to get snuggle power.  (They are soooo SILLY!)

Mrs. Seablom wanted to get in on the Snuggie fun as well!

    Ethan's Last day at Fishkill:

    We laughed....

    We cried....

and we will miss him a ton.

    Ethan, remember...once a frog, always a frog.

Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
    -Mrs. S.

This was a great week for Kids Canvas because they did a magnificent Thanksgiving project.  First they made a barn.  The colors were red and white.  Next we traced our hands and made Thanksgiving turkeys.  After that, the girls stapled it on the bulletin board.  I had a lot of fun doing this project. Nice job, girls!

                                                               Happy Thanksgiving!
                                                                                    Love,

    A Fresh Start!

The 1st quarter is behind us, so that means a time for new beginnings.

ELA:  We have 4 new published authors!

As always, these new authors got to do a read aloud for our class, and then bring their books around the school to read them to others!

Reading the books aloud several times helps to build fluency, a love of reading, and pride in one's accomplishments.

In other ELA news, Mrs. Seablom gave each of the kids a GIANT closable bag to go book "shopping" with, on Mondays.

The students select 3 books to put in their bag...making sure to get new books when needed.  This system will hopefully avoid lost books, and make it so each child always has something on hand to read.

Because we missed Foamy Friday last week....we had it on Monday!

This week we worked on the lower case 'n', 'm', 'x', and 'y'.

In reading we worked on text to text connections.  We focused on making 'deep' connections rather than 'surface' connections.  Surface connections are simliarities between names, gender, and appearance.  Deep connections are similarities between experiences, character traits, emotions, and the moral of the story.  First we paired up and came up with connections between members of the class.  Then we read Oliver Button is a Sissy and A Doll for William and came up with all sorts of connections.  Next week we will read When Sophie gets Angry, Really, Really Angry and an article on Anger Management...and then make connections between those.

Math: We started multiplication this week.  The concept was introduced through the construction of arrays.

The kids were paired up and instructed to make arrays with the pattern blocks.

Then they had to write an addition sentence and a multiplication sentence that matched their array.

The students had fun using the blocks, and it will help them understand the meaning behind multiplying.

Mrs. Curtain helps our class with math every other day.  She gives the kids additional one-on-one attention.  Thank you, Mrs. Curtain!

Science: We continued to learn about static electricity this week.  We watched a great brain pop movie on the smartboard that taught us about static.  Later in the week we watched a Magic School Bus episode that introduced us to current electricity.  We will be making our circuits soon!

Social Studies:  We are still working on the United States.

    Other News:
We had our 2nd monthly centenial assembly on Thursday.  The kids love it because it gives them a chance to speak on stage in front of half the school!

Our class was assigned to find 3 people facts about the 30s and the 80s.  Eight kids from our class volunteered to read these facts at the assembly.

I am sure they had to fight off some nerves, but they did a wonderful job.  I wonder who will volunteer next month?

Next week is SUPER short....only 2 days!  We have our feast to look forward to, though.  We can't wait!
