In our unit on Public Opinion and Political Ideology, we have begun to look at the evolution of values and view of government in the United States.  Of particular interest is that growing tension between the value of individualism and the belief in that "Second Bill of Rights".  We see this tension played out in the discussions and debates leading to the November Presidential election.

The question is, what is the role of government?  Is it for government to secure food, shelter and healthcare for Americans?  Do individuals have a natural right to these items and is it the role of government to provide them?  Or, is it the role of government to provide the conditions for success so individuals can make their own way?  Is the answer somewhere in between?  How do we see this question reflected in the current Presidential election debates?

What do you think?

i think the only role that government has is making sure it's people are safe and satisfied with the proper care and attention needed. yes government is who we count on to secure our food shelter healthcare and any other essential thing in an american"s life. we all have our natural rights to these things but we need the governmenr to assure us that we are going to have them. this quetion is reflected in the current election because all of our essesntial needs are going to be harder and harder to obtain if someone and something doesnt make a change in our government. right now the government is at its weakest and we are going to be affected by this

Government shouldn't provide food and shelter, people should be able to work for it themselves unless they are unable to. A large percentage of people who are on welfare are capable of working yet unwilling to. Why should we pay for those that are able to work?

With the way things are going right now with the economy, government needs to make it a duty to secure each and every American with their basic necessities. This includes food, shelter and health care. Sure the typical working family can provide for themselves, but how can we be certain that the sole provider of the family wont be laid off from work tomorrow? Our economy is slowing but surely crumbling before our eyes and if nothing is done, financial crisis are sure to arise. And when this happens, then what? I believe one of the ways to avoid this crisis from growing, is to put our trust back in government. The only way we can do this is if government shows us they can work for us. They need to show Americans that they are able to provide us with what we need. It's as simple as that. (hopefully)

The government plays a very important role in American's lives. It it their duty to make sure that Americans have opportunities for individuals to be able to obtain shelter, food and health care. They must make sure that they are all comfortably attainable. They must find a balance in how much we should be taxed, so that we can afford these essentials, especially in the current economic crises. People have a natural right to those three important things, but they cannot expect to sit by idly and have the government provide them. Conditions for success is what should be provided. It is up to the people to work for what they need. This is reflected in the current presidential debate because the candidates are depicting their plans for how they will go about these issues.

I believe that every individual should be able to support their own self and well being and that most of our taxes should not be use to support healthcare and wellfare. But seeing that majority rules and today's economy is not doing all that well the government does have a veru important role in securing the best for its citizens. In the current 2008 election Obama is more likely to support our economy in this time of need and ensure tranquility among the middle class and lower middle class, while McCain wold be better for the elite.
