270 pages - The city of Ember has "day" light from street lamps, otherwise it is pitch black. Ancestors created the city to be self-sufficient with food, power, etc. But, the lights seem to be going out even during the day. When Lina finds some clues to lead the way out of the city she shares the information with her friend Doon, they are both 12 years old. They both want the city inhabitants to survive so they are brave enough to try and find a way. What they find amazes them. To tell more would give too much away.
I found the idea of the inhabitants of the city finishing school at age 12 interesting. How would you feel about starting your life profession at age 12
