This week we will be learning about John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed). We will be mapping where Johnny traveled, learning about his character, and making our favorite "tall tale." We will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed's birthday on Thursday by tasting apples. We could use some apples to help us explore. If you would you like to donate apples so that we can taste and learn about all the parts, please send at least 3 apples by Thursday (That is Johnny's birthday). That should give us enough slices for everyone to try each apple.
In math, we are working with addition facts by playing some math games and answering story problems. When your child's reading folder comes in on Monday, I will be adding a math log to the folder. The math log will be used to record the minutes that your child and you work on math. This could be doing addition or subtraction flash cards, solving story problems, working with money, playing math games that we have learned at school (I will be sending directions home with the math games we learn.)
Parent volunteers will start this week. Please check the parent volunteer page to see schedule. If there is a problem with any of the days, please let me know. If you are unable to make it, please let me know. I look forward to having parents see and help with the wonderful things we are doing in the classroom.
Parent teacher conferences are coming up shortly. You should be receiving a reminder of the time you signed up for in your child's green folder this week. Please cut off the front page of the reminder, fill out the back page and send it into school with your child to confirm the time and date.
I will be sharing with you both academic and social and work observations that I have seen in the classroom with you. Feel free to bring any questions you have with you. I would also ask that you would come with a goal that you would like to see your child accomplish this year that you would be willing to share with me. This will help me make sure that your expectations for First Grade are met.
