    Apples.
Just when you thought we had learned about apples, it just keeps going and going.
The students are really interested in the apples and loved tasting the apples to celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday. Thank you to the Gage and Zemanski families for donating apples.
Conferences are quickly approaching. I am looking forward to discussing with your your child's academic progress already.
We will start reading groups this week and with that, Book Buddy bags will be coming home. The books in the Book Buddy bags are "just right books" - books that are on your child's level. (We will discuss this more at conference time.) Please read these books with your child (They should read them to you). Book Buddy bags will only be sent home on days when I meet with your child (hopefully at least 2 times a week).

    This week we are learning:
Reading: daily five stations, responding to reading
Writing: learning how to put words in our writing (Finger tapping)
    Phonics: r, p, u, j
    Math: addition games, story problems
Science: life cycle of apples, review of apple tree seasons, factors of production
    Social Studies: maps

named Johnny Applesseed and we will be learning about Johnny this week. Johnny's birthday is Saturday and we will be having a little apple party on Friday. We could use donations of apples for taste testing on Friday. If you are interested in donating apples, please send in a note by Thursday and I will let you know the quantity needed.
We are continuing to adjust to our routines. We are having some difficulty knowing appropriate times to socialize with friends. When I give them time to talk to their friends, they get quiet but when we are working they start talking to friends. Please encourage your child to socialize at times when it doesn't cause a problem with our learning.
Thank you for all you help with reminding your child to bring home and back their green folder every day. Thanks also for sending back their red portfolio folders. I hope you enjoyed going through the work with your child.
I am beginning to work on the parent volunteer schedule. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer and the days and times you can help (if you have not done so already.)

Just a reminder our schedule is
    Monday: Physical Education
    Tuesday: Art
    Wednesday: Physical Education
Thursday: Library (Please help your child remember to return library books this day)
    Friday: Music

A look at our learning this week:
Reading: non-fiction stories, getting facts from books, tall tales, daily 5 stations
Writing: using words when we write during writing workshop
    Phonics: h, n, l, i
    Math: addition and number games
    Social studies: Maps, Johnny Appleseed
Science: how apples grow (just an intro), taste testing apples

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Apples.
We have enjoyed starting our unit on apples last week and even enjoyed our second marble party. We are now working on earning 70 marbles for our next marble party.
We are continuing to adjust to being in school all day. It can be a long afternoon and many of us are struggling to stay focused in the afternoon. The first month of First Grade is a big adjustment.
Speaking of adjustment, please encourage your child to use lowercase letters especially when writing his/her name.
This week, I will begin assessing your child using AIMSWeb. Each child will be assessed in letter names, letter sounds, blending sounds (reading non-sense words) and phoneme segmentation (breaking words into sounds).
I will be out of the classroom on Tuesday afternoon for a math workshop.
    This week, we are learning:
Reading: Daily 5 stations of Read to Self, listening and word work. Sequencing
    Phonics: C, T, M
Writing: writing workshop, making books, sentences and word order
    Math: compare, dot compare, counting
    Science: seasons and apple trees

     Have a wonderful week.

I hope you all had a nice Labor Day Weekend.
We had a great week of school last week. The boys and girls are doing a great job of adjusting to first grade and a full day of school. We had our first marble party on Thursday and are already working on our next goal of 50 marbles.
Thank you for checking your child's green folder every night. There have been a lot of papers going home during the first few weeks of school. If you have not returned the emergency forms, please do so as soon as possible.
I hope you had fun hearing your child read their first poem from their purple poetry folder this weekend. We enjoyed practicing it at school. We used our highlighters to mark the sight words that we have learned this year.
After looking at the replies about my slide show/parent meeting, most of you would prefer to look at the slide show at your leisure. I tried to post it on the website so that you wouldn't have to download it but I was unable (It kept on stating my browser could support the slides - I tried 3 different web browser too - talk about frustrating!)   I have created a link over on the side for you to view it. If you have any questions, please let me know.
This week, we will be learning
    • Reading: responding to apple stories, continuing to work on learning our daily 5
    • Writing: continuing to learn routines for writing workshop
    • Phonics: letter sounds for A, D, G, C
    • Math: counting activities like Start With/Get To, Count together 20, Mystery Boxes
    • Social Studies: finishing our books about ourselves (We didn't have time to finish them last week.)
    • Science: Apples parts, tasting apples
    Have a great week!
