7th ELA classes discussed persuasive appeals used in advertising: credibility, logic, and feelings. These are the three basic persuasive appeals developed by the Greek philosopher, Aristotle; he called them ethos, logos, and pathos. We looked at some real-life examples of these appeals in advertising, and students demonstrated their understanding of these appeals by creating mock commercials in class. We also finished up the legend, "Merlin and the Dragons." GATE classes spent some time reviewing Word Within the Word List #17 stems and practicing grammar knowledge. Students created skits in which they incorporated stems from List #17. We also finished reading and analyzing "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov.

All classes watched a current events video and responded with mock editorials. 7th ELA classes elaborated on their journals and turned them into full length editorials. Students responded to a current events story, formed an opinion, and developed this opinion over three paragraphs. GATE classes finished reading, analyzing, and discussing "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury. We reviewed the concept of theme, developed themes for past readings, and identified recurring themes from literature. Students will demonstrate their understanding of theme with a "theme collage."
