All classes have completed units on Ecology this semester.  When I teach this topic, I try to encourage you to have an appreciation of the incredible area in which we are blessed to live.  Please describe (climate, flora, fauna, etc.)  your favorite natural area.  The area you describe does not have to be local, but you must describe it in your own words.

My favorite natural area is Punta Del Este in Montevideo, Uruguay (my hometown back in South America). It is a straight tiny strip of land that divides River Plate from the Atlantic Ocean in the south tip of Uruguay. The climate in Montevideo is mild and temperate. During the summer it is usually in the 80°F and in the winter it is around 60°F. Punta Del Este has very quiet beaches and beautiful mountains. The climate is air maritime. The air smells of salt spray and pines. Uruguay is mainly a grass growing land that joins with the Argentine pampas. There are not a lot of forests in Uruguay but you will see a great amount of palms, which I absolutely love. The Southern Lapwing is the national bird in Uruguay. This bird is always flying through Punta Del Este. No matter where you are in Uruguay you will always see it. Uruguay has a total of 477 different bird species, of which 5 have been introduced by humans. In Punta Del Este, you will also see great amount of fish due to the vast amount of beaches that surround this strip of land. The most common fish are the Golden Dorado and the Seal. The carpincho (which would translate to something similar to a water hog) is a very common animal all through Uruguay. Punta Del Este is absolutely beautiful. I love the fact that Uruguay has set up special areas in Punta Del Este where no development is allowed. They are trying to conserve this gorgeous area and all its natural beauty.

My favorite natural area is the state of Oregon, which is admittedly large, but was the only one I could think of that I was fond of. My mother's side of the family lives there and I love visiting in any season in any area of the state. It snows in the winter, but is hot in the summer without the miserable humidity that we suffer from in the south. This area is also home to a variety different land forms. There are mountains, deserts, valleys, forests, and coastline all within one state.

My favorite area is the river. There are many river systems world-wide, but we are blessed enough to have this right outside our doors. The climate of Tennessee is temperate, with warm summers and mild winters. The waters of the river are generally warm and allow for much wildlife. There are many species of fish, such as darters like the snail darter, and many varieties of trout. The river ecosystem also allows for other animals to survive such as crayfish, turtles, snakes, as well as birds and bears who feed on the fish and other animals. It is truly a web and a circle of life. There are many plants surrounding this system like ferns, mosses, and pines. The river systems of our area are beautiful and offer, aside from beauty, much recreation for us. This area is certainly my favorite

My favorite place is our property on the Ocoee River. My sister and I go out there during the summer and swim. We occasionally see fish swimming around by the log, and when the the dam upstream of us is releasing water, it goes from knee deep at the deepest to over my head in about an hour. There is a mass of greenery everywhere, and trees grow out over the river to shade it whenever the sun's out. It's quite relaxing to go up to the log and float down for a little while then swim like a maniac towards the shore so one doesn't get washed down. :D

I think my all time favorite would come from my hometown as well, back in Ecuador. I lived there for about twelve years and the fauna and flora over there is just incredible, i was part of this hiking group, and we would go out to different spots all over the country every other weekend, its hard to choose, but from all the places I've been think one of the most beautiful would be this place called Pasochoa which is currently a protected havitad, and its also a huge area and in the middle there is an in-active volcano, and the diversity of animals and plants is amazing, its a bit of a tropical rainforest like area that is filled with all sorts of greens and a wide diversity of birds and animals, in this forest alone, there are more than 132 bird species. Between those you can find in this area the national bird, and a majestic bird, the Condor, which is also a protected species. But you can find different mammals throughout the forest, such as wolves, foxes, bats, and pumas and many more, also amphibians such as frogs and toads. The temperatures vary depending on the altitude, and the area, but its mostly between the 50 to mid 60ºF. And also includes more than 300 plant species, including orchids and different wild plants. There is soooo much to say about this place, but thats my pretty basic description of it.

I really like the mountains of the Rockies, mostly Lake Tahoe. Even though it is developed there are still a lot of natural forests and of course the crystal clear waters. The sharp curves and turns where the water dug it out makes every canyon unique and its so beautiful. While skiing up there i encountered many different types of birds and chipmunks and other small rodents. Many of the trees were types of evergreen and firs.

My favorite natural area is the river, it is an aquatic biome. The part of the river that my family and I enjoy going to is a branch off of the Tennesse River. Up river is is very cold, and further down river it is warmer, but it is because there is a slower current. It is cooler on the river during the fall and winter, but during the summer and spring it is warmer. At night during the summer an spring you may need a light jacket at night. When we go camping out there at the river it is very peaceful and relaxing! I love it, God knew we needed it for a place to get away!
