Dear students,
As school approaches, I am curious about your thoughts. I wonder what you are looking forward to or what you are excited about. For example, I am excited to get to know a new group of kids this year and really looking forward to teaching language arts. Let me know what you are excited about!

Smiles,
Ms. Maybaum

I like to be back on a set schedule. Mrs. Lisauckis has a blog like this, too!

Thanks Katherine! Well said. I agree. It is nice to be on a set routine. Although my cats don't like me being gone for so long during the day.
When you read this comment, come and get a ticket for being the first person to blog! Congrats.

Keison and Jacob - Yes, we have several field trips planned. We will most likely be going to the Dell Diamond in May for the DARE Dell Diamond day. During that field trip you get to go see part of a baseball game. It's really fun but can sometimes be really hot.
We will also have a science based field trip. We usually go to Natural Bridge Caverns in New Branfuls but unfortunately, this year we can't. The fifth grade teachers are planning something for you that will be just as fun though.

Brandon - I usually put up pictures and even videos on the webpage of my students doing activities. That will increase as the year goes on. I just have to make sure I don't put someone's picture up that isn't allowed to be on the webpage. I haven't got that information yet of who I am allowed to post and who I'm not allowed to post so no pictures just yet.

Spencer - I am really excited that you are looking forward to the science fair! Your presentation is everything. Make sure your writing is developed and elaborate in each required section. Think of Juli in Flipped. She did something simple but analyzed it to a higher level of thinking. That is what the judges are looking for. Good luck!

Love all the blogging guys! Use proper grammar and spelling please!

I was wondering this when I went to Your Blog and Mrs. Grienkes Blog. How much points is worth for the extra credit? One more question. Does the Extra Credit go on our report card or some kinda of test or review?

By the way I think i have been blogging too much. Teehee! :D

So for the science fiar, waht you mean is do something simple but make it more interesting and exiting? Thats how to get first place?

    9/24/2009 7:50:01 PM
  • Maybaum

The extra credit I was going to give for the reading response was between 5-10 points depending on the level of your response. The extra credit points are added to an assignment on grade speed. Mrs. Greinke and I usually will add them to the assignment that will benefit you the most or we give you a certificate so you can decide where to put the points.

Let me give you a hint about the science fair. Most students only do the minimal amount of effort and rarely put all the requirements on their project board. The first thing you need to do is choose a project that you can explore and explain to your best ability. If you choose something too difficult, then you have trouble. If you choose something too easy or something that not original, it can hurt your score with the judges. We will get more into this around November and I'll give you lots of pointers.

I agree with Brandon about the pictures part of his comment. Maybe only put pictures of him and me since we got the idea(just kidding lol). Hope you don't get bored of my lousy comments with a lot of messed up grammer. Laugh out loud A.K.A lol. Hope you never have to have a meeting again.

I'm just courios but, how do you get some many hilarious jokes. Do you stay up until 2 am trying to think about jokes (which would be nice). Do you have a "Joke's for your Student's" book? If you do, can you tell me about,(lol). If the TAG students do the bonuses by copying other students, will they get the points,(Again lol). I know getting off topic, but how long have you been a school teacher?

Sorry that i didn't reply on the question you metioned, I'm looking forward and already on science. I've always wanted to do endless science projects and have fantastic one that we are already doing. I hope we make a volcano out of vinager and baking soda =). I'm putting a lot of comments because i want to have more than Brandon. =). i hope i'm gettiong close

    Michael,
Patience is a virtue! Just remember that as you're waiting for me to approve your comments. :)
To answer some of your questions, no, I don't stay up late thinking about jokes. Everything I say is pretty stream of consciousness. It's just what I am thinking at the time. I do have a good sense of humor and find things funny that most people don't. I remember stories that I think are funny and make connections to what is going on in class to those stories. I think that's why I seem funny to you - really I'm not.
We probably will make a baking soda volcano but it will be different than what you are expecting. I've also made a volcano out of Alka-seltzer and corn syrup. It's pretty interesting. You should try it. I should warn you that it takes a while to react.
This is my 7th year teaching at Brushy Creek. Before that I worked at Cedar Valley Middle school as a long term substitute. I taught in two 6th grade world cultures classes and one 7th grade science class. It was fun but I like 5th grade better. Before Cedar Valley, I was in college at Northern Arizona University. While I was there, I taught a 3rd grade class for my student teaching.
I will definitely try out shelfari. It sounds intriguing.
Good luck on the more posts than Brandon thing!
    Smiles,
    Ms. Maybaum

    Jacob,
Our big fifth grade field trip isn't until April. The Dell Diamond Day isn't until May and the Cedar Valley trips aren't until February or May. You'll have to be a little more patient before we are able to take our field trip.

    Sincerely,
    Ms. Maybaum

    Students,
Please make sure you write in proper grammar and punctuation. Pretend like you are writing a friendly letter to me. I'm seeing so many errors in your writing that it makes it difficult to read your thoughts!

To answer some questions that were posted (mainly by Michael - smiles):
I have an older sister, Beth. She lives in Colorado and she is 20 months older than me.
I am not always nice and happy but when my students listen to me and work well for me, I will always be nice and happy.
I don't "go" for a certain football team. I usually just like rooting for the underdog. The only team I really can't stand is the Yankees but that's baseball.
The books on my shelves are either books from my childhood, books students have given me, books I have bought or books I have gotten free from book orders. It has taken a lifetime to collect all those books and will take just as long to read all of them! I enjoy reading and imagining myself in another place, time or world. It's exciting to guess what happens next and fun to recommend books to other people.
Michael, I completely forgot to wish you a happy birthday!! I'm a horrible person. I'll make it up to you tomorrow. My birthday is in the summer so I never got an opportunity to celebrate it during the school year. Because of this, I don't pay attention to birthdays a lot of the time. So sorry.
Thank you for the nice comments you all have been giving me. I hope to return the compliments throughout the year!
The red stuff on the webpage is just paint splotches that are in the shape of flowers, roots or other designs.
The field trip isn't officially set so I can't tell you where we are going to go yet. It will be super fun and have something to do with science though!
    Smiles,
    Ms. Maybaum

Happy Birthday Michael! Although this isn't the topic of the blog, it will make you happy. Next time, let's stick to the topic on the blog.

Also - emoticons (faces made with computer symbols) make it difficult to read your writing if they are in the middle of the sentence.
