    Students,
There are some really interesting instincts and patterns of behavior in the animal kingdom. We learned in reading class that orangutans are afraid of heights and have to learn how to climb trees (which is where they live)! There are lots of other animals that have some odd behaviors that are either instincts or learned behaviors.

Comment below if you know of an animal or have researched about and organism that has an unusual pattern of behavior.

    Here is an example:
Ogre-faced Spiders, also known as Net-casting spiders or stick spiders, are native to Australia and have an unusual way of catching their prey. Instead of making a stationary web, waiting for their prey to get stuck, they hold a small web in their hands and throw it out at their prey to catch it. What an amazing instinct!!

What interesting facts do you have??

    Students,
Are you looking for a good book to read? In this blog section, recommend a book to other students and describe what the book is about. Don't give away the ending or any of the special surprises in the book but try to get other students hooked on wanting to read it.
Please don't forget to write in proper grammar and in complete sentences. If you're not sure, type your response in Microsoft Word, then copy and paste after editing.
    Happy blogging,
    Ms. Maybaum

    Students,
You just finished reading the 5th and 6th chapters of the book Flipped. For extra credit, post a comment with a summary of either chapter 5 or chapter 6 and then comment about someone else's post. You don't have to summarize both chapters, just one. You might also have to wait for others to post so that you can comment on those. After your summary, you can also comment about how you feel about this book (do you like it or not like it and why).
For those students without internet access at home, you can write your summary on a piece of paper and turn it in. During class, ask Ms. Maybaum if you can read the blog posts so you can comment on one of them on your piece of paper.
Just so you know, blogging may become an actual assignment for class so it might be good for you to try this out now and understand how the system works before your are required to do it.

    Happy blogging,
    Ms. Maybaum

    Dear students,
As school approaches, I am curious about your thoughts. I wonder what you are looking forward to or what you are excited about. For example, I am excited to get to know a new group of kids this year and really looking forward to teaching language arts. Let me know what you are excited about!

    Dear students,
I know it's summer and you all are probably not checking the blogs but if you are, there is a great opportunity for former and future students. There will be a NASA downlink on August 12th. This is where the astronauts on the International Space Station will have a live chat with students at the Bob Bullock Museum. They are asking students for questions to ask those astronauts aboard the ISS (there will be 13 of them - the most ever!!). If you would like to submit a question and be selected to ask the astronauts your question live, please email me by July 27th and I will submit your question to the organizer. If your question is selected, I will let you know.

    Lots of luck,
    Katie Maybaum
