This is the Blog Spot for Ruth White's Way Down Deep You must read the entire book before you can add a comment here.

A meaningful Blog will include a variety of opinions and a rich discussion of a topic.  This Blog will give students a chance to share their unique views about this year's Bluebonnet books.

Here are some ideas for comments:

  • If you were going to visit Way Down Deep, where would you go first and why?
  • Were you pleased or surprised by the ending?  Explain.
  • What does a panther have to do with Ruby?
  • Would this story have been as good if it were set in a big, modern city?  Explain.
Once several students have shared their own comments, you may want to respond to those comments.  You may respond to your classmates with courtesy.  Make sure to add some sort of additional insight, though.  (Don't just say, "I agree.")

i love this book. overall this book has a good lesson. the lesson is that curiosity can lead you to things you never dreamed you could accomplish. my favorite part in this book is when cedar reader found out that he had the case of cussitus. this was my favorite part because he had the chance to share his feelings about his mother dying. i believe sharing your feelings is important because then the burden that was on you can be taken off. when that burden is off you can renew your mind and have a fresh start in life.

I thought this was another great book from Ruby White. It was a little sad i mean she just found out who was her real family. I was glad but sad i think this would be a great read aloud!

If I went to Way Down Deep, the first place I would go is The Roost. I would go to The Roost first because it seems like most people would go there to get settled into the town, just like when people come to America, most of the time they go to the Statue Of Liberty first.

I don't think it would have been as good in a big city because then there wouldn't be the mountain that Ruby was taken from. It would be smack dab in the middle of somewhere.

Blake, I disagree only because of the reading level of the 2nd graders can vary between who it is. It might take one of them shorter than it took you or one 6 weeks! It was harder for us to read since we only read a chapter a day, but I agree that it would be difficult for some- just not for all. I think story of the book itself would be good for 2nd or 3rd graders.

Way Down Deep is a good book. It is mysterous because we do not know where Ruby comes from or who her familly is. I would be scared if I were Ruby.

I think the panther had nothing to do with Ruby. I think it was Ruby's mother that was killed by the panther!I know that the Grandmother said she was killed in a car accident but she could have said that to not scare Ruby. I wish we could have Kids Day like Way Down Deep.

Veronica I agree completely, i don't think the partner had anything to do with the story either although maybe the whole car accident really did happen. Like they say the truth hurts! However who would just drop their kid off? To me that didn't make any sense!

I thought it was interesting when it turned out that the man trying to rob the bank was crying and only had a fake gun! Even after this, the people of Way Down Deep greeted him as one of their own citizens.

Caitlin, your statement about how this book helps us realize "your dreams can take you to places you never thought of" really digs deep into the soul of this book on more than one level. Wouldn't it be great to fall into one of Miss Arbitus's dreams?
