When you hear the word “Christmas”  or "Holiday", what comes to mind first?

Do you tend to think about yourself or others right away?

Why?

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word "Christmas" is presents. I tend to think both about myself and others. I love receiving gifts, but it is also fun to watch others open their packages.

Whenever I hear of the word "Christmas," it is hard to resist the feelings of presents and joy. But for some, there is no happiness. Every year, when it comes time for the holidays, I try to think about how lucky I am to have a warm bed,a loving family, and a tree full of presents. We are so truly fortunate that sometimes we take it for granted, and don't realize how fortunate we are. There are many others in the world who have never gotten a present in their lives, never had a decent meal, never really had a place to call "home." During the holidays, I really try to symphathize for those unfortunate people, because they are much worse off then we are. Even if you feel like you aren't getting all the presents you wanted, or your holidays aren't going to be what you expected, don't take these things for granted, because there is always someone worse off then you. Always.

Ah, Christmas. Holly with glistening red berries, mistletoe, snow, and merry music with jingling and jangling bells. That is what comes to my mind when I hear the word Christmas. I also tend to think of the wonderfully long break from school and my amazing teachers. When I hear the joyful word "Christmas", I neither think of myself nor others, but just items that represent Christmas. Later, though, I think of my past Christmases with vacations and family alike, but I will always think of Charlie Brown. The Christmas special is a charming cartoon with a heartfelt lesson. I think of these things because they all come with memories for me, be it watching snippets of Charlie Brown's Christmas with my cat or looking at all the holly my mom has stored in my room.

Well, when I hear the word holiday I usually think about Christmas first. Then when I think about Christmas, my mind usually goes straight to my wish-list. I know it's bad to think about yourself first, but it's like a reflex. Although, then I start thinking about other people and what I should get them. It makes me feel good when I actually get something for them with my own money. I then also think about my friends in Wisconsin and the big ham dinner we used to share with them. I guess I think of myself first when I hear Christmas because it is related to presents but at least after that I start to think of other people. Hearing Christmas always brings me joy.

When I hear the word holiday I think of a break. The main thing that comes to my mind is spending time with people I don't get to see very much. I love to make homemade things for my cousins, aunts, and uncles. Although I have to admit that I love to recieve gifts also. Something I also think of when I hear the word holiday is food. Every holiday we have some traditional food. For Thanksgiving we have turkey and pie,for Christmas my dad makes his famous gumbo. I can't wait until this Thanksgiving!

The first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the word holiday, is MARDI GRAS!!!!!!!! I have lived, for all but two years of my life, in and around New Orleans. Fat Tuesday is, in my opinion, an EXTREMELY important holiday. I know it is somewhat selfish, but I envy my friends back in Destrehan because they get out from school for an entire week. On the week of Ash Wednesday, those feelings of annoyance come back with ferociousness. Annoyance with my dad for posting on a job in Houston, annoyance with the district for not setting aside that week for this holiday (which is really childish, because I know why they don't set it aside as a holiday). So, I guess the answer to the question, "Do you think of yourself, or others," my answer would have to be, I think of myself above others, unfortunately.

When i hear the word "christmas" or "holiday" I think of family and friends. I usually think of family though, because on almost every holiday I get together with my family. I also think of joy and happiness because that is usually the feeling in the air at that time of year. Usually I think of others rather than me on holidays. I think about all that I have and how lucky I am to have amazing people around me. No one should ever be sad or alone on holidays. On holidays I like to give gifts and joy, because there is no other feeling in the world can make you feel that good when somebody opens your gift and loves it.

When I hear the word "holiday" I always think of my family. I guess it's hard not to for me. Every single Christmas Eve my whole family sits by the fire and watches Christmas movies and drinks eggnog. I know that your proboly thinking "how is that such a great memory". Well for me that small thing is an amazing memory. It's what I look forward to when I think about Christmas. There's so many other memories I have but if i really had to only pick one to do that would be it.

Christmas is a jolly time of the year. It has such a happy feeling to it. It's true, I do look forward to presents, food, and happiness around the house, but that's not the point. I think Christmas is a time to be thankful for all we have, whether they are luxuries or plain everyday necessities. I’m glad that there are people out there who donate food, toys, shelter, money, and other things that unfortunate people have not been able to acquire. There are many great foundations that our school participates in, such as the NJHS raising money to support a cure for some disease (I’m not sure what it was) that many people are suffering from out there. I’m sure they’d greatly appreciate it if you’d just pitch in a dollar or two (like me) to bring them closer to happiness, a carefree life without being affected by a harsh illness. We are also a sponsor of “Toys for Tots”, collecting money for toy-less tots. It’s very simple just to take a trip to the dollar store and purchase a few $1 toys for homeless children, but it’s very hard to convert from a cold-hearted person, to a warm-hearted person (such as Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol!). For some, Christmas is a time of receiving great things from others, but for others, this is just a time of year we get older, but not necessarily wealthier. I pity those thousands of homeless out in those dark, cold streets. My heart will go out to them when I devour my Thanksgiving feast next week. I hope they will be okay and happy this frosty Christmas.

When I think about the holidays, I think about spending time with family and friends.I think of loved ones that are gone ,but alive in our hearts. Christmas is a time to be happy and count our blessing. I think of others because I try to put myself in their shoes. It is unfortunate to say that many do not have the luxuries we do. Many can not celebrate with their family because they are fighting for our country or their families did not want them. Some are mentally ill and can not afford to get treatment. Many just need help.

When I hear the word "Christmas", I think of snow, fun, presents, Christianity, and joy. Even though living in Texas doesn't usually mean snow, it still is always assosciated with Christmas in my mind.

When I hear the word Christmas, I think of hot chocolate, presents, Christmas trees, and even snow! Christmas is a time for celebration and giving. Of course it's nice to receive presents, but what you give away is more important. We should be fortunate that we are all so lucky and symphathize for the less fortunate. I believe everyone should have a good Chritmas and enjoy it as best as they can. Christmas is not a time to mope around and sulk about what you didn't get as presents. It's about caring for others and enjoying what you have.

When I hear Christmas I think about the biggest celebration of the school year, the longest break of the season besides summer, and the celebration of my religion. I definitely think about other and what I'm going to get them or just what they are going to get. It's an amazing feeling when you wrap a present, they open it, and you see the look on their face. The sigh of relief that they really do like what they got. But I do think of myself also. I always count down the days until Christmas and wonder "what am I going to get?". It's a very exciting time of the year with carols, traditions, decorations, and happiness and it is my favorite holiday by far.

Whenever I hear the word Christmas, I think of happiness and a day filled with joy. It is a day that my family and I devote to our religion. I always love waking up and it smelling like Christmas-pine trees and gingerbread. When my family goes to sit by the tree to open presents, I always love to see their expressions. I love to hear what they say when they are excited and surprised to see their gifts. Christmas is one of my favorite holidays and it makes me feel fortunate to be able to wake up and come down and see all the presents. I know someone out there is waking up and looking at a road because they do not have a home where they can spend time with their family. The word Christmas reminds me to give to those in need of help.

Whenever I hear the word "Christmas" I think of many things, but the first thing that comes to mind is family, and all the happiness I have experienced with them. I can remember baking cookies with my grandma, and playing in the snow with my sisters (while in Michigan, not Texas). The best thing about the holidays with my family is having a HUGE Christmas get-together every year. My sisters, parents, cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles all come together to feast on turkey and watch Christmas movies (my favorite being "A Christmas Story")for hours at a time! Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, what ever holiday you celebrate, you can always spend it with your family!

'Christmas' and 'holiday' are perhaps the two happiest words in the English language. When I think of Christmas, I think of family, presents, and my religion. Sorry if you're offended... I'm a very religious person, even if I don't talk about it much. Anyhow, I LOVE the holidays for every reason you can think of- gifts, family, friends, happiness, memories, traditions... I could go on. I guess that the term 'the holidays' means to me the time around Christmas, when we're all anticipating the coming day with excitement. All in all, both Christmas and the holidays are the happiest times of the year(unless you have no heart.)

When I hear the word “Christmas” or “holiday”, I tend to think of family time with people ubiquitously happy. But in some cases, it also makes me feel saddened. Usually, I like to think about others who are less providential. Most of the people we know are more fortunate than others. Every year, someone out in this world is unlucky, and every year I try to do the best I can to help to make Christmas and other holidays better for others.

When I hear the word "Christmas" or "Holiday" the first thing that pops up in my mind is presents, no school and holiday!
Christmas is my second favorite holiday of the year. On that very special day my whole family gets together and we have guests over and I get many presents and some of them are really kool! I love it when we have school holidays because it is a study free day and i'm not as tired a I usually am. Holiday means a lot to me because it is like that you can just sleep all day and nobody really cares what you are doing for example you can go crazy and take long showers, sometimes i even have my cousin come over and we make up dances and stuff. By this time you must have realised that how much I love holidays and i just can't livee without them!

I usually think about not having school or presents, or spending time with my cousins. but sometimes I think about Jesus and his birth.I usually help set up the holiday stuff because I have fun and I can tell my cousins when they come over that I helped with the decorations. I love spending time with my family on the holidays because we can have fun and play games and stuff.

When I think of christmas I think of times when my huge family come together, I see people open their presents and I get to see people I might get to see once a year. Like my uncle Tim he playes in an orchestra across the world.I get to see him on christmas and its really cool to see his kids open their presents, smile, and say what is this. The last reason I love to hear the words christmas is because every year I buy my mom a necklace or braclet that I have saved up for all year. That is the reasons I love to hear the words christmas.

When i hear the words Christmas it makes me think of seeing all of my family, getting presents, and my church's Christmas Eve service. Every year on Christmas and a little bit after we go see my grandparents in Mississippi. Then we go see my other grandparents in Lufkin. Christmas makes me think of getting presents because i love getting gifts. But what hearing Christmas makes me think of the most is my church's Christmas Eve service. the reason this is most important to me because this is the time of year where I get to hear the Christmas story every year. This is very special because I absolutely love this story and it means a lot to me. That is just what hearing the word Christmas means to me.What a holiday means to me is that we will most likely get out of school for at least a day. When ever we are out of school I normally get to go shopping. So whenever i hear holiday I get really excited.

When I first think of the word Christmas I think of presents. I love getting presents as much as I like giving them. I sometimes forget how lucky I am to be able to receive these presents that others cannot. I like the satisfaction it gives you to give presents to others.

When I hear the word Christmas it makes me think, of number one: presents, number two: seeing my family, and number three: the cheerful songs. Every Christmas me, and my brother, and sisters make a huge Christmas list of just random things. Then on Christmas we usually end up getting all of those things. Then second is that every year me and my family have a huge get together and open present, and eat alot, it is really fun. The third thing is all the cheerful Christmas songs, they just really get me set in the spirit of Christmas , and I adore them. During the holidays I do often think of myself lots, even though I need to be thinking of the less fortunate, they don’t get the things I do in the holidays. My goal this holiday is to try more on thinking of others, and not my self.

I when I first think of the word “Christmas” I think of the reason we celebrate Christmas, Jesus’ birth. I think of going to church on Christmas Eve and having tons of fun with my fiends and family. I think of opening presents in the morning and celebrating the holiday with my family in the evening on Christmas Day. In addition, I think of all the good things that happen around Christmas time and all the things we do for others. Such as donating food, clothing, and giving money to charity. Christmas time is when people try extra hard to be nicer and happier. Christmas is an occasion when people put aside their differences and come together as one big family and that is why I love Christmas time, besides all the fun times I have.

When I hear the word "holiday", I think about my family and friends because during the holidays I surround myself with friends and family, and have a good time. I like to celebrate the holidays with people because the air is full with joy, hapiness, and ease. Plus, no one wants to spend Christmas, or the holidays alone, because then you don't get to experience it with another. Also, it means WINTER BREAK!!! I love the break because I can relax, and not worry about working, homework, or projects!

When I hear the word "Christmas" or "holiday", the first thing I think of is going to my grandparent's house. At my grandparent's house I get to spend time with all of my cousins. It's a lot of fun because there is always something to do. One of my favorite things to do is going up to the barn and playing with all the sheep. It's a lot more fun than it sounds.

Oddly enough, whenever I hear the word "Christmas" or "Holiday", I think of snow, snowmen, and anything that has to do with snow, even though that NEVER happens in Houston. This is because of all the TV I have recently watched and all of the news I have seen about "Large Amounts of Snow Have Fallen Around the USA". During Christmas and the holiday season, (like most people) I tend to think of myself in an "I AM THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE AND I GET ALL OF THE PRESENTS!!" kind of way, and others, well, I don't actually think of them very much at all. I would suppose this is because of human nature, and to want all of the things that we just don't need. This is one thing about the holiday season that I should change; I need to start thinking of others more than I think of myself and to give more gifts than I receive.

**Thought of The Day - If every one in the world wanted to give more than they receive, would the giving ever end?? **

When I hear the word "Holiday" alot of things come to mind. Not only do I get time off school, but I also get to 'hang' with friends, and family. I can stay up all night playing video games, and sleep as late as I want to. On a "Holiday" I feel free to do what I want, and to be myself. As most people do during a "Holiday", I tend to think only of myself, and what I can do to satisfy myself. I rarely ponder on what I can do to make others feel better, but since I am 'growing up' I am starting to think about that more often. In the future I plan to give more, and not want anything in return. In the future I plan to be a better person.

When I hear the word Christmas the first things that come to mind are snow, presents, and all the christmas decerations you see in peoples yards. When I think of christmas it brings me lots of joy, but then i will start thinking of the people who don't have a lot. I start thinking of ways I can help them during the chrismas season. So I guess I do think of myself first and seeing all the presents under the tree , but i still dont forget about all the people who might not have a happy Christmas.

I like most people sadly think about presents. I try not to but I'm thirteen and there is free stuff; do the math. Then I think about sitting around the tree with my family. It also reminds me of the true meaning of christmas and the reason we celebrate. It makes me think of snow and how i wish we could get more of. We did have alot on friday though so no complaints there. One of my favorite parts of christmas is going around looking at Christmas lights. When you turn on the radio and hear Christmas music, thats when you know its Christmas

When I hear the word Christmas, I immediately get excited. I think of the smells of cinnamon, sugar, and hot chocolate. I makes me think about a beautiful lit up Christmas tree, all decorated. I always think of cold, windy weather, and people watching Christmas movies. Every year, my family will watch the classic Christmas movies, and we always drink Wassle.

When I think of the word holiday, I think of a break from school. Also I think of a fun time, because I get to see family that I haven't seen in a long time. When that thought first comes to my mind, I think of everybody, because we all get together and visit. My favorite holiday would definitely be Christmas, because it's the time to remember what the Lord did for us. I just thought that I would add that in there.

When I hear the word Holiday I think of all the great games that are coming out. Well, a lot were pushed back because of Modern Warfare 2, but still there is a lot of games coming out. There's Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2 that came out in November. Which to choose is the hard question.

When I hear the word "Christmas" or "Holidays", I think about gifts, christmas trees, and getting to see my family. I think about this because every year we put up our Christmas tree. And every year we go to my great grandparents house in Bandara, Texas to see my family and open presents on Christmas day. I also think about others, and how some kids don't get very much for Christmas. So almost every year we donated something to the toys for tots foundation. That way kids every where can have a great Christmas holiday.

Christmas isn't about the gifts. It's about when Jesus Christ was born. That's the real meaning of Christmas. Most of us, including me, celebrate this by being with family, opening gifts, and playing Christmas music. When I think of Christmas, the wonderful scent of cinnamon and trees rushes through my nose. Christmas is very special to me and my entire family, and I'm glad I spend it with them.

When I hear the word Holiday, I immediately think Christmas. Then I think of family and the fun times I get to spend with them. These moments are so memorably because I only get to see my extended family twice a year, during Christmas and the summer, because most of my family lives in Arizona. We have so much fun in Arizona whether it is jamming out to guitar hero, playing baseball with grapefruits, or a lengthily convocation at the dinner table. I value these moments tremendously and know the season would not be the same without them.

One of the first thing that comes into to my head is my birthday, strangely enough. I think of this because, my birthday is only two days after Christmas so I start getting super excited for it. Especially, this year because, it is my thirteenth birthday. Another thing that comes into mind when I hear the word "Christmas", is the beach. Weird right? Christmas and the beach do not go very well together. Well, it does for my family, it is almost like a family traditon to go to Saint Martin in the French West Indies every Christmas break. Whenever I hear the word holiday, I immediately think about my uncle and grandpa. They come to visit every year for around 2 weeks. We have a really fancy dinner and have a ton of laughs together. It's so much fun to have them here. Then I start thinking about what I'm going to get my family and friends for Christmas. I always freak out and worry that they won't like my gifts. And then after that, I think about how much I long for it to snow here. I used to see feet and feet of snow every year in London. It brings back tons of happy Christmas memories. I absolutely love the holidays and can't wait for Christmas!!!

When I hear the word "Christmas," I first think of the decorations and putting my tree decorated with Dallas Cowboys ornaments, up in my bedroom. I have to be honest and say that I think about not having homework for a couple of weeks. It's not that I hate homework, but I just need a break by the time Christmas comes. I really don't think of myself first, but I admit, I'm pretty close to the top of the list. I think the reason I think about decorations and my tree first, is that it makes me happy to see everything looking like Christmas. I got my tree for five dollars after Christmas at Walgreens. When I see it, it reminds me of how happy I was the night I got it.
I also think of the poor people, because both of my parent's were poor, and I have relatives that are poor. When we visit my Dad's family in Ecuador, I see what being poor is really like. We give them things to try to help, and I hope they have a Merry Christmas.
