I promised to send you the names of books that would give you lists of books that students enjoy reading.  I have to decided to deliver this information using the blog feature on this website. This way I can get feedback from parents and students who have read good books or have good resources for finding books.  One of the books that I like is Guys Write For Guys Read. The target audience for this book is boys who comprise the largest precentage of our reluctant readers.  What is great about this book is that it offers such a variety of topics as well a variety of writers, graphic artists, and cartoonists.  The stories are short, involve adolescent boys, and usually leave the reader wanting more.  The editor of the book is Jon Scieszka and you can find the book in the school library.

I will write about more books later.  Please feel free to leave comments as this is a new feature and I would like feedback.

I am a fifth grade teacher, and I have finally found a way to get some of my students who don't enjoy reading hooked on books. I have ordered the books on CD, allowing them to listen to the book, but requiring they follow along, as well. We started this endeavor with a severely dyslexic child, but I've continued it with my hesitant readers this year, and their desire to read has soared. They're finally allowed to enjoy the books and then, without knowing it, they realize they can actually read and have fun on their own. Check out your local libraries. They have some books on CD to check out!
My suggestion for a few GREAT books to read: Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke. They're working on a movie, but it can't possibly be as fascinating as the book! The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is also good, and is a faster read than Inkheart.
