Momentum

I never thought that having a blog would ever be a difficult task. And in truth it really is not difficult. But over the last couple of months I have found it hard to produce anything for my blog. Last month’s post was kinda weak in my opinion and more of a space holder than anything else. Oh the blogger shame! (Yes, I’m intentionally being overly dramatic-but follow along with me). This blogging thing has been relatively a new thing for me, so I feel that I can give a brief history using smileys:

  •  At first Yay! This is so awesome and cool. I’m going to blog twice a week!

  •  Then the first hiccup Hmmm, I didn’t get to blog today. I guess it’s okay to blog once a week and I can alternate on topics.

  •  Which led into Agh! I haven’t had the time to blog this week. I’ll just try to blog every other week.

  •  And finally I can’t do it! I’m never blogging again.

But what really happened? I let one off-day snowball into heavy press of negative baggage about something oh-so very simple. Now some of you savvy readers can already see where I’m going right? “Mr. Kochis is going to draw a parallel between his blogging record and homework.” Well, yes that would be a good comparison. I think there are a lot of students who can relate to such an experience. You skip one assignment or cut one corner on a project. Maybe it’s just that you didn’t answer that last question for math AND before you know it; WHAM! You’re failing, your parents have grounded you, and your socks keep falling down (well maybe your socks still stay up). But this doesn’t have to apply only to homework. It could be any habit that takes a dive: exercise, healthy eating, daily prayer.

I’m reminded of a friend of mine back in my college days. He was an petroleum engineering student and he described this as the moment of inertia. What's that you say? That is the idea that it will always cost you more energy to stop a moving object than it will take to keep an object moving. So what’s the lesson here? Good habits build upon themselves; so do bad habits. That point in life where you first start to move your life in another direction, especially after you’ve let it slide for so long is going to be the hardest part. Now after you get moving it should get easier. Is that a guarantee? No, but let’s see if I post another blog next week after having taken such a long hiatus.
