    Good afternoon, Miguel,

Good catch. I never did get around to posting that file on the site - sorry. And I don't think I have a copy of that file here at home - only on the network at school.

There is a chance that I will be at PVI on Monday. If I make it in there, I will post the file then and post a follow up here. If not, well, just enjoy your long weekend a little more, and we will deal with it on Tuesday.

    Thanks.

    Hello Mr. O'Leary,
I had a quick question on the homework.
on hotmath it says the fallowing to a problem that is trying to find a perpendicular line to the line given to us:
    It says
    y – 3 = 1(x – 0)
    Then,
    x – y = –3

    Why wouldn't it be y - x = 3?

    Good Evening, Brandon,

Well, those two answers are actually identical. Your answer is y - x = 3. Shift that around so it is in Ax + By = C - the standard order for Standard Form. It becomes -x + y = 3. Now, multiply everything by -1, and you get x - y = -3 which is the HotMath answer.

Which brings me to a point that I should have raised in class today - if I didn't, please remind me to on Thursday. Standard Form, we know, must have the A, B and C as integers. Well, our book doesn't stress it, but many books ALSO require that for Standard Form, A be positive! This would also explain the Hot Math answer.

Hope that helps. Have a good night.

Thank you for getting back to my question so soon. Yes, that does clear it up for me. So that means that the coefficient of x must always be possitve correct?

Our book does not stress that 'A' must be positive, and I didn't exactly stress it in class either. So for now, I can't hold you to it. Later in the year, when we do Standard Form of a Quadratic Equation, the book does put more emphasis on it.

Now, I just did a quick search on Standard Form, just to see what's out there. The first hit is from a site called Algebra Lab, and it says this:

    Ax + By = C
A, B, C are integers (positive or negative whole numbers)
No fractions nor decimals in standard form.
Traditionally the "Ax" term is positive.

Notice that it says "traditionally". So I would say it is a good habit to get into, but I won't stress about it.

    Hello Mr O'Leary!

I just wanted to ask you what is our homework due 11/02/09?

    Good evening, Miguel,

I will be updating the homework page over the weekend, and your homework won't be due until Tuesday. If I recall, the homework was:

    p. 156, # 3 - 36 every 3rd
    p. 150, # 1 - 6 all

Yes, some of this you have already started. I want to spend time going over the stuff before I have it due.

    Hope this helps.

    Mr. O'Leary
