How To Practice!

We have only 1 month until our Student of the Month Performance. I have given your teachers
enough copies of the music so that you each have your own part. Try to follow these practice tips
and play your flutes during one of the recesses.

Playing a musical instrument is like a sport, you must practice! In the beginning stages of playing a
musical instrument your practice time can be about 10 or 15 minutes per day. What really matters
though is HOW you practice.

You need to be your own teacher for yourself when you practice. By listening carefully to what you
are playing, you will hear what sounds good and what could sound a little bit better. Now pick a
small part of the music, maybe as little as 2 or 3 notes and play them slowly and carefully. When you
are more confident, then try to play the same section a bit faster.
The next step could be to add a few notes either before or after the section you have worked on and
try to link the parts smoothly without hesitation.

Some other aspects of your playing should get some of your attention too. Take some time to think
about your posture, breathing and hand position.

Now admittedly, not many people love to practice because practicing means working on the things
that you are having trouble doing! But when you have goals for yourself and work with persistence,
great things will happen and you will end up doing things that you never thought you might be able
to do! Remember to end your practice session by playing through your favorite piece of music and
have fun with it!
