Happy Beach Day and Memorial Day!
This week in language arts, students are finishing our poetry unit; students have each written a selection of poems. This week, students will make a cover page and a table of contents for their poetry books, which need to be typed and are both due on Thursday. In addition, we will be finishing our next core novel, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, this week. All the reading for this book will take place in class; however, students will need to make sure their notebooks are finished and ready to turn in by Friday. They will have both in class time and homework time to work on this. We will also finish our last unit of writing: persuasive. Final draft persuasive essays are due Tuesday. Finally this week, students will be taking a spelling and vocabulary pre-test on Tuesday. They will then each pick seven words to study for the week (it is seven not ten because students must now also know the definition of the word, as well as how to spell it). Students may pick words that they need to practice for either spelling or vocabulary reasons, but no matter what their definitions must be in their own words and make sense to them. They will then complete a homework assignment using these words and will take a test on them on Friday.
This week in social studies, students will be learning about Rome. This week they will show what they have learned about how Rome expanded from a small republic to one of the largest empires ever known. With their group, they will make a flipbook detailing with artwork, each stage of expansion. The flipbook will be worked on in class, as well as for homework and will be due on Tuesday. Students will then complete a study guide for what they have learned about Rome so far, and take a quiz on Thursday. They will also need to make sure their social studies notebooks are ready to be turned in on Thursday.
