BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is the foundation for high school mathematics courses. It is the bridge from the concrete to the abstract study of mathematics. Topics include simplifying expressions, evaluating and solving equations and inequalities, and graphing linear and quadratic functions and relations. Real world applications are presented within the course content and a function's approach is emphasized.
Expected Outcome
Through the study of algebra, a student develops an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics and the sciences. Algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem-solving situations. Students are expected to gain not only conceptual understanding of mathematical principles but also knowledge of, and experience with, pure reasoning. One of the most important goals of mathematics is to teach students logical reasoning. The logical reasoning inherent in the study of mathematics allows for applications to a broad range of situations in which answers to practical problems can be found with accuracy.

* Grades are based on overall points for the entire semester. There are typically ~1200 points each semester.
Progress grades are posted on Zangle. Students are encouraged to keep their own running total grade and to verify grades posted periodically. Questions or concerns about grades need to be submitted in writing either through email or in person.
Assignments & Activities
Homework is given daily and will be checked at the beginning of class on the following day. A schedule of homework assignments will be distributed in class and is posted on TeacherWeb. Homework assignments will be collected with Homework Quizzes. Chapter Vocabs are due and collected the day of chapter test.
I will go over homework questions in class. If you have trouble completing problems assigned, ask me! Do not wait until the day of the test to tell me that you are lost!
Classwork is to be turned in at the end of the period.
Quizzes are given with or without prior notices throughout the chapters. Hand-written notes and homework are allowed, unless specified. Quizzes must be completed in pencil!
Tests are given at the end of each unit and are usually a mixture of multiple choice and free response questions. There will be 6 or 7 tests during the semester. Tests must be completed in pencil!
Projects may be given several times during the semester. They may be individual, group, or partner projects, and may involve research and presentation work.
Final Exam one per semester, will include all topics covered.
Extra Credit will be assigned to the entire class from time to time. A maximum limit of 3% extra credit will be added to total grade at the end of semester.
Extra Help Students who are current on class notes, HW, CW, and use classroom time productively may come in for extra help during lunch or after school.
