Mrs. Gay has been teaching science for 26 years. This is her 11th year at
SSHS. She has taught at the University of Colorado - Boulder, Eaglecrest HS,
Kent Denver School, and CMC. Mrs. Gay has recieved several awards for
teaching excellence including the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching, Amgen Award, and the Colorado Outstanding
Biology Teacher Award. In November, 2003 she became a National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards certified teacher in Adolescent/Yound Adult
Science with an endorsement in Biology.
When she is not teaching, Mrs. Gay enjoys spending time with her family
(husband Ken, 17 yr old daughter Jamie, and 15 yr old son Jeffrey),
skiing, mountain biking, drawing, gardening and hiking.
The two main goals for my classes are:
1.To help students develop a conceptual framework for IPS and Biology;
2.To help students gain an appreciation of science as a process.
I want ALL of my students to develop the skills and attitudes of a scholar.
Thus, the primary emphasis in my class is on:
1.Developing an understanding of concepts rather than as an accumulation of
facts;
2.Personal experience in scientific inquiry;
3.Recognition of unifying themes that integrate the major topics if biology;
and
4.Application of biological knowledge and critical thinking to environmental
and social concerns.
