There are many opportunities for students at SSHS. These clubs, groups, and presentations help students gain a better understanding of themselves, their strengths and areas of interest. All of these will help a student make better career choices and will also allow colleges to see what kind of commitment and leadership students posses.

COMMUNITY AND NON-SCHOOL BASED ACTIVITES

There are many opportunities to learn about possible career pathways and to hook up with mentors who can help identify possible career interest areas. Here are some possibilities that students might consider. Many of these can be tailored to meet individual student needs. College also look at these for indication of commitment and leadership.

Volunteer for a non-profit organizations, such as:
Animal Shelter
Horizons for the Handicap
Routt County Museum
Lift-up of Routt County
Advocates against Battering and Abuse
Yampa Valley Medical Center
Local preschools
Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club
Activities with local service organizations such as Optimists, Lyons Club, Rotary,
Local public and private elementary schools
Bud Werner Library
Habitat for Humanity
Various church missions to third world countries
United Way
Art related opportunities, such as:
Participate in community plays as an actor, stage/technical crew member, or organizer
Participate in community art shows or volunteer at the Steamboat Springs Arts Council

Other options:
Student representative on Legacy or Assets group
Work on a political campaign
Have a part-time job in an area of interest
Tutor younger students
Be a Partner for a younger student
Participate in community-sponsored sports
Be a member of scouting
Hold an office for a community club or organization
Work on fundraising for a non-profit organization
Volunteer to be a mentor or support person with Horizons for the Handicapped.
