CAREER EXPLORATION

CAREER EXPLORATION
Career Exploration is a process that helps students focus on their current
activities and plan for their future. A successful career exploration
process will allow students to plan for classes and courses they want or
need to enroll in, what extra curricular activities they should be involved
in and what steps they want to take after graduation. This process should
start well before the senior year. If students and parents would like help
with this process it is suggested that they schedule an appointment with
Mrs. Dudley to get help starting.

An excellent resource available to SSHS students is using the College in
Colorado website (www.collegeincolorado.org). This is an Internet resource
that is free to students and parents, and utilizes the Bridges products.
On this site find the EXPLORE tab, which has a huge amount of information
about careers and jobs. It is very user friendly and has lots of
features that students enjoy using. The PLANNING site will work on
identifying colleges and other training opportunities for students to use to
plan their future.

Another site that is very helpful comes from the Bridges site and is the DO
WHAT YOU ARE program. SSHS subscribes to this program, making it free to our
students. To log go www.bridges.com., and then click on corporate site at
the bottom of the page and on use Site ID 27916 and Password sshs. Once a
student has logged in using these ID and password, they will establish their
own account with their own ID and passwords.

The DO WHAT YOU ARE program is ideal for all age students, but especially
freshmen and sophomores. It provides detailed learning styles and
information to help students understand who they are. The Bridges EXPLORE
site has a huge amount of information about careers and jobs. It is very
user friendly and has lots of features that students enjoy using. The
PLANNING site will work on identifying colleges and other training
opportunities for students to use to plan their future.

The following information can also be found in the Career and Academic
Planning Guide available in the Career/College Center or located on this
website under that link.

Other opportunities that students can utilize to get career exploration
information include:
-The PLAN test, which all sophomores take in the fall of their 10th grade
year. This is a preliminary ACT test, and comes with a lot of questions
about
their career plans, likes, dislikes, and other characteristics. The
sophomore students receive the results of this test back during January of
the sophomore year in their Anchor class. Anchor teachers have an
established lesson plan that they go over with their classes to further
develop ideas about career exploration.
-CHART YOUR COURSE TO CAREER DECISION MAKING - This booklet was developed in
2008 and passed out to all freshmen anchors. It has a step-by-step plan for
making career decisions, with lots of suggestions. It is also available in
the career center.
-Career and Academic Planning Guide - This 80+ page booklet is produced by
Mrs. Dudley and is updated every year. It contains an abundance of
information about all aspects of post-secondary planning. It can be obtained
upon request from Mrs. Dudley
-Enroll in Career and College Planning. This semester class offers a variety
of activities and options for doing career exploration, along with guidance
in the college application process.
-Participate in Internship, work study or Senior Project to get hands-on
experience in career development.
