The Explorer Project

The Explorer Project

You have selected an explorer to complete a biography.

	Your student in this class has been assigned a report on the above 
explorer.  Each student must write a report on this explorer.  In the report, 
they must find as much of the following information as possible.  

Guide Questions:
	Use these questions as a guideline for focusing your research.  You 
may omit some questions and/or create your own questions.  This is 
especially helpful if you decide to use a QAD.
•	Who is your explorer?
•	Where did the explorer come from (what country or region)?
•	What was their childhood like?
•	Was there anything in their upbringing that guided them in later 
life?
•	What was their occupation(s) before becoming an explorer?
•	Why was their role important at the time?
•	How did they become an explorer?
•	Did anyone work against them?
•	What were they trying to find out with their exploration?
•	What were this explorer’s biggest challenges?
•	What was the best, worst part of their exploration?
•	How long was their voyage?
•	How did they accomplish their task (did they have help, what special 
tools, technology and/or people at the time did they have, etc.)?
•	Where they successful?

Sources:  Students are to gather at least three sources of information to 
put on source cards or sheets.  Source sheets will be provided.

Notes:  Students are to create notes from their sources.  Questions are 
provided as a guide to help with each student’s notes, however they are only 
meant as a guide.  The students should choose one of the note forms (web, 
array, herringbone, QAD, outline) they have been taught.

Rough Draft:  Students are to use their notes to create a rough draft of 
their report.

of their report.  It should be thoroughly proofread and neat.

Presentation:  Students should be prepared to present their report orally in 
summary form.  In addition, it should have a good visual presentation 
including cover and map(s) if appropriate.
