Weekly Letter

January 4, 2010

Greetings and Happy New Year from

Miss Gerber’s Class!!

Dear Parents,

Hello!  I hope everyone had a nice holiday and vacation week.  Thank you so much for your contributions to our holiday party!  It was nice having everyone attend and your children definitely enjoyed having your help with their holiday crafts.  I hope you enjoyed their “surprise” arts and crafts presents as well!!  Thank you, also, for the very thoughtful holiday gifts that were given to myself and the classroom paraprofessionals.

For the month of January the overall theme will be “The Winter Season/Winter Clothing.” Some of the related topics we will discuss are:  sorting and classifying different kinds of winter clothing; introducing the concept of what slides and what does not; graphing and living and nonliving winter objects and animals; arctic animals; concepts of hot/cold; freezing/melting; thermometers and temperature; recognizing our last names; and tracing our first names.  This week some of the books we will read are The Mitten, The Hat, and The Jacket I Wear in the Snow.  In circle we will play a mitten matching game using different textures; we will sing the “Snowey-Pokey” using our winter clothing; and also practice our pre-reading skills with a Snowman poem rebus.

This month we will also begin discussing our letters!!  Our letter/sounds for this month will be /P/, /F/, and /H/.  We will discuss all of three of these letters throughout the month spending as much time as necessary on each letter.  For sharing, though, we will have one focus letter of the week.  For this week, please have your child bring in an item that begins with the letter /P/ as well as a magazine picture of something that starts with this letter for our /P/ collage.

Well, as much as I shudder at the thought of saying it, we will have to see if we have some snowy weather to accompany this month’s theme!!  Have a pleasant week!

Sincerely,

Miss Gerber :)
